I was originally diagnosed with a Gleason score of 3+4. I had the slides sent to Dr Epstein at Johns Hopkins and the results came back as 3+3. Is that automatically active surveillance?

If it was me and I was your age with your stats, AS would most likely be my choice. However, I would suggest the due diligence of finding a doc with experience with AS including appropriate testing (confirming biopsy or multi-parametric MRI, etc) and making sure "active" was part of the program.

if it were me at your age i'd definitely do AS once a urologist confirmed that it's a valid option. I'm pretty sure that's what you'll hear.

are you going back to the urologist who told you you were a gleason 7?

Congratulations! That's the kind of news we'd all like to hear. Nothing is "automatic." It's always your decision, and I think AS is a great option as part of a program.

Of course AS isn't written in stone, but AS with your confirmed stats, sounds like a wise option, that many of us here wished we had available at the time of our dx. You should at least strongly consider it, before going into any invasive treatments. You have a minimal amount of the lowest grade PC possible, something to think about.

I, too, had a second opinion from Epstein which turned a Gleason 7 to a Gleason 6. I have been following AS for the last two years, using yearly 3T mp-mri to make sure the cancer doesn't progress.

With your numbers, you are a "poster child" for AS.
