I've read that if a guy had PCa surgery and didn't freeze sperm beforehand, that it is still possible for a doc to extract sperm from the testicles directly with a needle, and then use that sperm for in vitro fertilization. Anyone on HW know a guy that actually did that? Mostly a curiosity question, really.

(For the record, wife and I have five kids - ages 8 to 17 - and have no plans of attempting for more even though we are still young enough to keep 'em coming if we wanted to.)

I think babies get very sick and have a hard time recovering from their PCA surgery.

I've heard it's theoretically possible but I don't know anyone who has done it.

When a man may have interest in procreation then his urologist MUST speak to him about such issues prior to surgery or radiation for PCa. I hope yours did. This appears to be overlooked commonly.
I know not about the sperm extraction process you mention but fertility doctors can perform modern miracles regularly so I do not doubt it can be attempted.

When I did IVF it was commonly done for men with infertility, often men who had elected to have a vasectomy and then moved on to a new relationship.

I was told it was not reasonably possible which to my understanding meant it was wicked expensive and i should freeze as thats fairly inexpensive.

In theory yes, don't know of a single person who has underwent that. Sperm banking is the more common approach for young men with PC, with hopes for future offspring.

By one of those coincidences that has to be seen to be believed we have a new member, Bonbon99, whose wife is pregnant with sperm that was surgically extracted, more or less as we are talking about here. He doesn't have prostate cancer (probably, he's a young guy worried about his PSA) but instead has a rare condition that causes low sperm mobility.
