BBC reported last night that a link between PCa and vasectomy is suspected. Am curious as to how many sufferers here have had a vasectomy witin the period 10 years prior to dx.
Not a scientific poll (I am going to add a poll to the posting if I can get it to work) as it will lack the control of a group that had vasectomy but do not have PCa, but interest only. Just to get the ball rolling, I did have a vasectomy 10 years before dx, about 7 years before the symptoms started, and the "snip" itself was a particularly unpleasant experience.

Seems the moral of the study is do some research before asking the question. The link above seems to indicate there is no link

AlanB5, you might have missed the main point of the BBC report.
There WAS a new report just issued which correlated the association between vasectomy and lethal prostate cancer (not the far more common non-fatal or indolent PC). This Harvard study was (impressively) conducted over a 24-year period.
Here’s the ASCO link: http://jco.ascopubs.org/content/early/2014/07/02/JCO.2013.54.8446.abstract
The “relative risk” was notably higher for men who actually died of PC (RR-1.19).
One thing to remember is that correlation does not mean causation.
There certainly many independent factors which may correlate very highly with PC; I can name a few:
· The increased cumulative number of miles one drives in his lifetime has a positive correlation with the likelihood of PC diagnosis.
· In fact, the cumulative hours that one sits on his butt also positively correlates with the increased likelihood of PC diagnosis.
· The number of grey hairs one has is positively correlated with the increased likelihood of being diagnosed with PC.
· On the other hand, the total number of hairs on one’s head has a strong negative correlation with the likelihood of being diagnosed with PC.
That doesn’t mean any of these are the cause of PC. Further work is required in this area…

Ok: In my case, I had a vasectomy in 1983 and was diagnosed with PCa in 2011...So that is 28 years. But I honestly belive that I had PCa for at least 10 years before being diagnosed since my PSA was 1.7 at age 50 and that is too high (by approx 0.8) according to the PSA test inventor, Dr. William Catalona. So if you look at this issue in that light, it was about 18 years later for me. I was lucky since my PCa was Gleason 3+3 and have been < 0.015 for 3 years now.
Finally, I take generic Cialis for the extra "boost" that gets me 100%. And now articles are linking that mediaction to Melanoma. We can't win!

I had my tubes tied on 1988 and dx in 2014...so 26 years for me. *shrug* I would have still had the vasectomy even if there was absolute PROOF. Reality is still that 1 man in 6 will get PC. It appears that the real cause of PC is being born male.

Its like saying drinking milk will lead to heroin use. Or the Wright Bros caused the DLH crash! The old timers used to call it devil's logic. Others use the term "straw men" Its used routinely in todays communication to win debates, arguments, points etc. It provides momentary and exhilarating victories…sadly thats the extent of its "worth"
