After Surgery. Swelling of the ankles.

I am two years past a radical prostatecomy with the removal of seminal vessicles and some lymph nodes. I now periodically have swelling of the ankles which I did not have before surgery. I also have developed subsurface rash in the ankle area which may be related to varicose veins. The doctors say the surgery has nothing to do with any of this but I was just wondering if anyone else has had this develop. I am 56 and exercise daily walking or running 5 to 10km and I was equally active before.

You might try Googling for "Chronic Venous Insufficiency" which sounds more like your problem than does Lymphedema.

I have some Venous Insufficiency in my right leg and it did become worse while I was in the hospital after my surgery but I think it was more related to being off my feet than to the surgery itself. It is caused by failure of the one-way valves in your veins which makes it difficult for the flexing of your leg muscles to force the blood back up into your body. Something to talk to your primary doctor about. Your urologist isn't the guy you need.

I get some swelling in the ankles and my PCP started her answer with, "Well at your age..."

Didn't hear much after that but she did suggest a hearing test.

I am thinking that I need to talk to her again.

Yes - get it checked out with your PCP.
