Prostate cancer patient sleeps a lot

hi,
i red many threads but it was hard to sort them by date posted so some of them were very old and mentioning old meds (admin, can you show me how to sort/filter search results by date).

I am searching the most recent ways how to handle metastasized PC.

My father is 64yr, got PC at age 59, with following:

Adenoca Gleason score date
4+3 12-12-12
4+3 12-26-13

Date PSA
8-18-2009 58
6-6-2012 4.9
9-14-2012 9
12-2-2012 17
6-10-2013 55
6-26-2014 32

Flutamid tblt, 2012
Lucrin inj, 3 per month 11mg, 2012
Docetaxel 140mg, 2013
All meds stopped, Pain killers only, june/july 2014
Radiation on pelvis, prostate, neck, 5/2014

Currently: IV with glucose and vit. B and C, Bonefos tblt, Megostat syrup, Trodon 4x 50mg daily, Pronison 1x 5mg (he didn’t complete the chemo therapy due to inability to travel to the hospital and prefers to sty home)

Past few months he sleeps a lot a lot, lots of pain, no appetite, when flipped on a side hurts after 5-10min, developed a sore on pelvic region which is always under pressure since he is bedridden, sore is below area where radiation was done.

My questions:
• Is there any meds to help at this stage
- would Lupron, Ketoconazole or Zometa help now
• Any meds to help against mets
• Any meds for pain
• Should he do radiation on bones
• How to handle the sore/wound on his back

So very sorry to hear about your father. All of your questions are tough to answer except perhaps for someone who has been there. Let me give this a bump and see if you might get more responses by tonight.

1one1, I saw where your father is from, my father is from the area, too. I know that all that new medication is not available, but apparently Ketokonazole does have similar way of action as Zytiga, as it uses a similar pathway to block the production of T. The main difference is the price. I would suggest that you suggest to your father´s doctor to try that medication, but it has to be taken very specifically, so follow the instructions carefully. It can also cause some nausea, so your father has to be monitored for the side-effects carefully.

I do not know if you are with him, or if there is someone who is able to "represent" him in front of the doctors. Sometimes in our neck of the woods, the patients who cannot speak for themselves will be sidelined and sent home. What I am trying to say, is that perhaps it wouldn´t be bad, for your sake of mind, to make a trip (if you are already not there) and get your father taken care of. He absolutely needs to get more pain medication, he is not supposed to be experiencing so much pain. When I talked to a doctor here, she told me "oh, we never went through pain management training" yet they are the ones prescribing pain medication. Pain management is a branch of medicine, so you need to find a doctor who knows what he is doing and get him to care for your father. Whether more radiation will be included in that or not, it is for doctors to decide. As long as patient can get to the center physically, and as long as the area has not been radiated before, it can be done. It can be done as 1-time visit.

I am not an expert on care for patients at that stage of the disease but we have members, sadly, who are. Perhaps some of them will respond if I bump your thread back to the top of the list.

I did Google for some of the medications you mentioned, many of which are either not used in the US (where I live) or have different names here. For the benefit of people who might know what to do with the informtion, here is what I found about the meds:

Flutamide = Similar to Casodex (older, more side effects)
Megostat syrup = some sort of appetite stimulant
Trodon = Tramadol = atyplical opioid not approved in US
Pronsion = Prednisone
Lucrin = Lupron??
Docetaxel = Taxotere = Chemo

The father seems to have discontinued most of his meds except for pain and seems to be in a Bosnian version of hospice care, or at least that's how I read this.

I am so sorry that you are going through this difficult time. Sometimes we caregivers feel hopeless on what we can do, but being near your Dad right now helps him and you. I am hoping you have assistance?
