Hello, everybody, how are you? I just went on to the Emory Healthcare web site and was able to see some of the results from my urinalysis, right before I had my prostate biopsy. Well, the urinalysis results shows a trace of Leukocyte Esterase [White Blood Cell] in my urine. My question is does that mean it's more likely that I have some sort of infection than PC? I haven't received my biopsy results yet, but I was kind of curious.

You know what? I just remembered that I took ciprofloxacin like maybe an hr. or so before my biopsy. Do you think the cipro is what the urine test noticed? Based on what I was looking up on the internet, I didn't see any similarities with white blood cell count and prostate cancer. However, it's 3:38am, Atlanta, GA. time. So, I can't call Emory to ask them any questions. Plus, I know that you all are more informed about this than I am. ANY information would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I still need to wait for the biopsy, maybe I could have PC and some sort of infection. I would just like to know your interpretation of this issue. Thank you!

I had to look it up....

Leukocyte esterase (LE) is a urine test for the presence of white blood cells and other abnormalities associated with infection.

White blood cells in the urine usually indicate a urinary tract infection. The leukocyte esterase (LE) test detects esterase, an enzyme released by white blood cells. Positive test results are clinically significant. The LE test is also used to screen for gonorrhea and for amniotic fluid infections. The combination of the LE test with the urinary nitrite test provides an excellent screen for establishing the presence of a urinary tract infection (UTI). A urine sample that tests positive for both nitrite and leukocyte esterase should be cultured for pathogenic bacteria.

A UTI is a lot more common than BPH - (lower urinary tract infection).

Instead of playing the guessing game, you should probably just wait for the biopsy results..... Have fingers crossed it comes back clean.

The only thing that I can tell you is that my husband's white blood cell count was pretty elevated when he was diagnosed. However, it wasn't just his white blood cell count that was off. His blood work had highs and lows all over the place.

Steve n Dallas is correct about not playing the guessing game. I know that is easier said than done, but he is right.

You should have your results soon. Wishing you the best outcome.

I too had elevated white count at dx, though my uro didn't do anything with it. His focus was on the cancer.
