Of all the expensive new drugs on the market approved for treating advanced prostate cancer, the most effective new treatment seems to be the combination of the standard ADT + docetaxel..This combination improved survival by 17 months, far longer than any of the new "breakthrough" drugs and treatments...Docetaxel is an old drug, the patent expired in 2010..

Agreed. And it's upsetting that it took so long to realize that chemo + ADT would be so beneficial for guys with high volume mets. ADT and Doxetaxel have been around for decades and we just learn about it now? (...Still not known if this is a good approach for low volume mets.). But yes, for all the high cost new therapies, this seems to be the combo that has proven the best significant survival for advanced cases.

Interesting also is the drug, Metformin...been around forever for diabetes, is relatively cheap, and for a subset of guys it may be effective at controlling PC. Jury still out, but just wanted to point this out because sometimes it's the drugs, therapies that have been around for a long time that sometimes are the most effective.

The newer therapies are just a start I hope. Combination therapies and newer drugs hopefully will push the survival times to a point we have just a chronic disease. Hopefully cheaper as well...

A friend of mine's husband was diagnosed last December . . . PSA 314 gGleason-7 with high mets. He was administered docetaxel and Lupron almost immediately. Unfortunately he wasn't one of the lucky ones, he died 7 months after Dx. Just saying that we need to keep pushing the envelope on the hydra . . . Q

Dr. Myers has me starting on Metformin. He said he's been doing this for 10yrs... along with other changes. (Avodart, Crestor, supplements, diet, exercise).

Quincy, that's one of the big mysteries about PC...Two men with almost identical numbers, one is gone in 7 months, treatments completely ineffective while others can cruise along out to the 10 year mark and beyond, treatments working as hoped for.....It seems we still have a lot to learn about prostate cancer...
