My last Uncle died today at the age of 92 from Prostate cancer that had roared through his bones like a California wild fire. He had only been in the hospital once in his life, five years ago for a knee replacement. Worried about our family curse of prostate cancer, he had been careful to see the Doctor and have it checked every year. When it showed up, they elected Provenge this past spring, but midway in the treatment he had to have a blood transfusion, which I guess ruined any chance of the Provenge working. My Uncle worked in a shipyard at the start of the second world war, and finished a four year apprenticeship in two years. He worked on the Battleships Alabama and Kentucky before joining the Navy, where he became a Navy Salvage diver (thing deep sea diver). The war ended as he was awaiting the convoy in California to take him to the war. So Prostate cancer has taken my Grandfather, Father and Uncle, but allowed my Cousin and I to survive it. I pray we find a cure soon for this awful disease.
