Is a RRP less expensive over the longer term?

Is opting for a non-RRP intervention more expensive over time, assuming no salvage therapy?

I ask this question because the numbers and costs I saw on that "60 Minutes" program for Cancer intervention were mind boggling. Some cancer sufferers declared bankruptcy because of out of pocket payments for medication!

Most Prostatectomies (surgery) cost around $30-$35K because that's all Medicare will pay so that's all private insurers are willing to pay..open or Robotic, same price.. EBRT on the other hand can cost $100-$150K by the time the 40 fractions are over....

I did not realise the enormous costs of these products, some which will extend your life by 42days (from a 60Minutes talkinghead).

I was an additional $8000 out of pocket for my DaVinci RRP and maybe another $1500-$2000 for PDE5i, Trimix's, Pads, Physiotherapists and pumps etc; but this is nowhere near the figures that people pay for their treatments.

I'm gobsmacked!

I went the DaVinci route to have my prostate removed. Total charge was $52,000 but that is without the discount given to insurance companies. Glad I had insurance as my cost was capped at $2,500. Just finished with SRT. The bill topped $105,000 for 33 sessions and again that is before the insurance discount and thank goodness my insurance capped my out of pocket. During that time there have been various drugs, some helped some didn't, a worthless vacuum pump and stacks of pads.

My daVinci robotic Prostatectomy cost $65,000 but billed to insurance was less than half. In fact the charge for the the 3 hours use of the operating room and robot was $21,000, again insurance paid far less. Luckily my out of pocket cost was less than $1,000 for everything.
