81GyGuy,
Thank you for all, I'm a post Viet Nam Vet, USAF Combat Security Forces is what we are referred to now, but back in the late 70's, we were Security Police, Air Base Ground Defense Forces. Basically the Infantry of the Air Force. I'm aware of all the services available, but have NEVER used any of them. The only contact I've had with the VA, is a Persian Gulf Registry physical, similar to Agent Orange exposed Vets of Viet Nam. At the urging of my Doctor, and my Wife of course, I had a physical at the VA Hospital in Syracuse, New York many years ago. There is a correlation of many disorders, that seem, in theory, are prevalent in SW Asia Vets, and I did 3 tours... ALS is one of them, a disease my Doctors Wife succumbed to, after a tour in Saudi Arabia in 90 or 91, as a Flight Surgeon. She had no family history... Anyway, without the physical, I would not qualify of any VA services pursuant to a claim, as was the case with his Wife. He is still paying the bills for all of her care. When I retired, my base closed as a part of the 1993 Bracc. Ft. Drum is the nearest post, but we never go there. Carm and I have superb health insurance, have never used Tricare or the VA, and to tell the truth, I'm a Vet that does not like to be thanked for my service. I did my job, it was my choice in life as a career, and I don't believe that I should be extended any special privileges pursuant to that. I'm proud, I do a presentation in Carm's Special Needs Classes every year for Veteran's Day, but that is the extent of it. My service is a memory on my DD 214, and a monthly direct deposit in my fun account. Life goes on, as it does post prostate cancer... PTSD, no doubt, coinciding with my inherited depression, has been an issue, but we all are aware, recognize it as it begins, right about now, with seasonal affected disorder, so ramp up activities. Tried Zoloft, hated it last year, so I fight with spirit, support, and counseling. There is no shame, period.
Thank you for your concern and advice.
