New here - biopsy later this week

I am new to the board, though not unfamiliar with it. My older brother is WAORGANY, who is almost done with SRT.

I am 47

I had at least two PSA screenings in the past 4 years (2011, 2013) but don't have the numbers. They were in the "normal range"

PSA 10/15/14 was 2.93
Repeat PSA 11/7/14 was 3.78

DRE was abnormal

Biopsy is scheduled for this Friday, and I'm just doing my best to remain calm. I figured this was coming one day, just didn't think it would be this soon.

Hello, Eric and welcome to HW. Your brother told us you might be coming...sorry you have to be here.

Hopefully, your biopsy will come back negative. However, if you DO have prostate cancer please take some reassurance that it is likely to be slow growing and likely to be curable. Give us all your pertinent info if and when and we will be here to help you thru this.

I hear you man. I'm just 48 myself and thought I was in the best shape I've been in in 20 years.

Ironically, I've changed in some ways for the better the past month since my diagnosis. I'm making great efforts to be closer (and less demanding and critical) of my two sons who are in college, and my wife and I haven't had a cross word since.

I'm trying to make it a positive.

Perhaps you don't have PCa, so I wouldn't get too worried. And yours is likely to be low risk based on what I've learned and what you said above.

Welcome to HW, sorry you need to be here.

For now just focus on getting through the biopsy - that's annoying enough to deal with. It's a shock to have to travel down this path - none of us wanted it and would do anything to avoid it.

Even if the worst is true, your PSA is low and you have a good possibility of being in that 'curable' zone. Treatment isn't fun and normal will change but you'll be fine and around for a very long time.

Hang in there and keep us updated on your progress.

Welcome Eric. I hate seeing young guys show up here. I was 42 myself. Sucks dude. Hopefully it wAs caught early and you will be on the road to a complete recovery in no time. Thinking positive thoughts. Todd

I would try to give you some advice on staying calm, but is be laughed off the forum. So I'll just say, hope your stay here is very short, you have a negative biopsy and go away.

And if that's not the case, I'm sure your brother told you, this place is pretty amazing

Thank you for all of the positive thoughts. It's good to know that there is this wealth of collective experience here, should I need it.

I am feeling better today. Much more calm, at least. I think, given my brother's experiences, that heading into my Urology appointment, I was expecting them to say "let's test you again in a month or two," but the doctor began with wanting to do a biopsy, even before he did the DRE.

Something I forgot to mention is that there was also traces of blood in my urine. I donated a kidney a few years ago, and have had numerous urine analyses done over the past four years, never with any sign of infection.

I can see your URO wanting to move right to the biopsy - rising PSA, a brother with it. The cross hairs are kind of pointing right at you.

Still, here's hoping you can dodge the bullet. Could be some other than PC.

I'll think up more cheerful, hopeful stuff later...

Sorry you are going through this, it can be a nerve wracking experience. Try to get some anti anxiety meds to take before the biopsy, it will make the experience a bit better. In any case once started the biopsy procedure goes pretty quickly and then you get to wait for news. I hope it's good news and you are clear.

Got the call this evening. PCa confirmed, but it looks like we've caught it early. Gleason was a 6. It sucks that it is cancer, but I am relieved to know the severity and that I have good options. I'm meeting with the Urologist next week to go over everything and start on a plan.

Yeah, that sucks kinda. But at least you don't have to go on waiting for the other shoe to drop. And with it being Gleason 6 that means all the treatment options will be open for you, and Active Surveillabce, too ... probably... depending on the number of cores and the percentages involved.

Man, I'm sorry to hear that. If you can, try and take some solace in the fact that it's a G6, but it still sucks to get this news. Hang in there and try and enjoy the holiday and if we can provide any guidance for next steps, just let us know.
