Were you intubated during the surgery?

A friend is going for surgery next week, he wasn't sure if his surgeon said he'd be intubated. Were you? Also he has tinnitus (just like me), did surgery or pain meds affect your tinnitus?

If he's getting anesthetic, it's standard to get intubated. I don't recall it affecting my tinnitus, but then it's likely I had other problems on my mind.

Hey, I have a story to tell you since you're a shop guy. Thursday was working with my table saw cutting some kindling, a piece of stock went through the wrong way. The saw produced so much kick back that the stock flew into the drywall 10 feet behind the saw and stuck into the drywall like a knife. Never seen that much kickback. Very dangerous.

Luckily, I usually stand on the side when cutting, although not always. I would have probably ended up in the ER.

For a number of reasons if you have Robotic surgery intubation is mandatory. If you have open surgery and regional anesthesia (spinal) intubation is likely avoided.

I was intubated during the RALP surgery, I have moderate tinnitus and I don't remember any affect on it after the surgery. I was too busy dealing with catheter and then not pissing myself weeks afterwards. I don't think there is any affect

I had open RRP and was not intubated. Four months later I had total shoulder replacement for which I was intubated, and the sore throat from that was pretty awful for a few days.

Squirm--I had open prostate surgery and was intubated. I have a narrow throat, which may be one reason why they did this. I had surgery to fix a broken hand this year and was intubated (FWIW, they also did a nerve block and I felt little pain for three days afterwards. No tinnitus.

I haven't had the surgery yet. My tinnitus comes and goes. I also have some hearing loss from too much shop time (the two maybe related but so far not bad enough do a lot of testing). My doctor wants to delay doing anything with my ears for awhile but I think she said I might need a hearing aid in one ear.

Watch out for that kick back. Of all the shop tools I have, the table saw always scares me to death every time I use one. One day I was cutting MDF and at the last minute the blade caught it and threw a 2'x2' panel about back towards me landing about 5 feet behind me. How I managed to get out of the path I'll never know.

A good friend of mine is a nurse anesthetist. He works on RALP patients and told me intubation is standard because of the head-down body position. He said that the inverted position increases the risk of breathing issues, so intubation is automatic.

My wife recently had surgery to remove a melanoma tumor and some lymph nodes, and I was surprised when her surgeon said that she would be intubated for that. I think it is becoming more and more common for any procedure where the patient has general anesthesia. I wonder if this is one of those issues where doctors choose it to reduce the chances of being sued if there are complications, rather than because it makes clinical sense.

But, from what I've been told, it seems to be done for valid clinical reasons for RALP.

I have no idea if I was intubated or not. Presumably I was, but it was inserted after I was asleep and removed before I awoke.

Apparently, the intubation irritated a spot in my esophagus, and my body responded by trying to cough to clear whatever was "stuck" in my throat. Every cough felt like a punch in the gut because of the surgery. It was very hard to suppress the urge to cough, but I tried mightily!

Intubated… to insert a tube into the larynx. I have continuous tinninitus as do all ATC types. Fortunately it comes in handy during this season... my neighbors dog SAM fills in the gaps other times. I know macabre. I think I need an agent... 80/20 your favor. I have a nice pension! Same deal if you want to collate my healing well archives. Plus I'll work on my self esteem issues.

I had RALP as was intubated. Would not have known if I hadn't asked. No soreness and no hoarseness or any other issues as a result. It was one of the things I feared going into surgery. Remember my dad having heart bypass surgery and he woke up with the tube still inserted and you can imagine the discomfort. The only real discomfort I had immediately following surgery was the catheter. Remember waking up and wanting to go to the bathroom. I kept telling anybody who would listen that I had to go! But my request was ignored. Oh the memories!
