I found my great-grandfather's death certificate last night on Ancestry. (Not an ad; I get it for free so, what the heck.)

Reading through it so see if there was anything I didn't know already, I discovered that he'd died from prostate cancer at 73, having suffered from it for "many years."

I can't say it makes me feel much closer to him, he died 17 years before I was born, but it is an interesting link. That, and the fact that my father and both brothers have also been treated for PCa, suggests this gene thing is mighty strong.

Yes, there is a strong family link in PC. I and my two brothers have it, but our father and grandfathers didn't.

While there might be a genetic component involved, I've often wondered about diet and environmental factors as well. Another factor in my family's case might actually be improved medical care. Most men in my family die from heart attacks and strokes in their 50s and 60s. Now that we've been well treated for that, I wonder if my bothers and I just lived long enough to finally get PC...

Father died from it as did. As did my grandfather on my mothers side. My other grandfather died with it.

I believe the odds go something like this. If your father has it, you have 1 in 6 chance. If your brother has it, it goes up to 1 in 3.

My dad died from it. Is the cancer aggression play a family role too?

My G-father had it, my dad had it, and I have it. The genetic link is indeed quite strong . . . Q

My dad as well. He was too sick from other things, to be treated with anything other than HT. So it didn't end well.

When my dad had it, he participated in a 'family study'. He found that ALL the men in his line (his father, his grandfather, his great-grandfather, his male cousins) had the same type of prostate symptoms. So, yeah, family history is real. When he was diagnosed, I was about 40, and he told me, "start getting PSA and DRE NOW". And I did. Thankfully.
