Was anyone else given Heparin syringes to self inject at home post surgery? (RP) Haven't seen this mentioned before and was curious. I was given 10 one per day in the belly.

I never heard of that. There are pills that do the same.

Sounds different.

Yes, I've used Lovenox (heparin) to bridge from warfarin therapy and through shoulder surgery and colonoscopies. It is used to prevent clots since I have a genetic tendency to clot. After having two DVT's in each calf, I am glad to inject the Lovenox into my abdomen! Much less painful.

I'm going through a Lovenox bridge this week before I have my biopsy on Jan. 6th. The heparin is fast acting and needed because warfarin takes up to ten days to get the correct level of anticoagulant stable.

Protocol here (In Arkansas) since last year at every hospital we have been to (three) if you are admitted and in the hospital you get heparin shots in the belly. Doesn't matter if you are in w/ the flu if you are laid up in the hospital you get them. (You can refuse them but I think better safe than sorry). Haven't heard of them sending anyone home to do them but again don't see what it would hurt after surgery since one would be laying around more and be more prone to DVT.
