Hormone resitant.. Dr wanting to start a pill treatment

Yesterday at my fathers appointment his psa has risen to 36 from 9 he never went undetitctable on loupron she said do to so many mets.. She has order a pet scan for next week. She said she will be starting him on a pill , when I asked what kind of pill she never said, just went all around it... Does anyone know what this may be... Thank You,, Sandra

Not sure why it didn't post my signature.. He's 49 dx nov 1st 2013 psa over 700 gleason 8 mets from neck to femurs, too many mets to list been on loupron till now.. Can't have zometa due to renal failure.. Loupron being the only treatment thus far had gotten psa down to 9 at the lowest.. No surgerys or fractures.. Lymph node involement as well

It sounds like Chemo, BUT I certainly wouldn't be taking any "pill" without the full explanations and contradictions, in writing!

For the signature you need to check the box "include signature" at the bottom of the post window.

I specifically asked if it was chemo.She said she wanted to see the scans but would go ahead with administering the scheduled loupron. She will go into full detail our bext visit. I just didn't understand why the lack of , I'm not even sure the word I'm looking for.... They go alot based on how many mets he has and lymph node involemet, drives me insane.

Hi Sandra,

The pills may be Zytiga with prednisone or Xtandi, which are second line hormone treatments. Chemo is by infusion, not pills. Xofigo is an injectable.

I always go into doctor meetings with written questions, and write down the answers as they are given. You should always ask what the medication is for, and what the possible side effects are.

Allen, what am I missing here:

"There are many types of chemotherapy (chemo). Oral chemo is any drug you are taking by mouth to treat cancer. Oral chemo is not put into the body with a needle. It’s a liquid, tablet, or capsule that you swallow."

I was told I could go on oral or infused as a next step. Now you're saying not so?

Docetaxel, the kind of chemo used for prostate cancer is by infusion only. So is Jevtana. I don't know what you're quoting, but it may be for other kinds of cancer. Sometimes (rarely) other kinds of chemo may be used for PC, sometimes in a cocktail with docetaxel and they may be pills. There are oral taxanes in clinical trials for PC, but none are yet approved.

Ok thanks, not surprisingly I was misled......again! Infusion is the route I would rather anyway.
