This forum's rule 5 came up in a recent thread. As usual, I had not paid any attention to it in the past, and had often posted links to, and discussed, research studies, surveys, and clinical trials.

If possible, could the moderators clarify what this rule means?

For those people who, like me, do not read the rules as closely as what we should, rule 5 reads as follows:
5. No posts regarding research studies, surveys, or clinical trials without prior approval from the forum administrator.

Well I never knew that myself. I am now wondering if I have breached that rule in posting three video links in my recent "Interesting PC Videos" thread. I would be interested to know and apologise in advance if I have.

Uuuhmmmm .... if you did break a rule I guess I piled on because I just posted another video on your thread. I also apologize if I broke rule 5.

Rule 5 means that if you join the site with the intent of getting long term members to take your survey or read about your clinical trials that you need to contact Peter, the owner of the site, first.

Yes, rule 5 is not intended to stifle discussion but to control the use of the site to recruit participants in studies, trials, surveys, etc.. In general, if you are the author of a study or a principal in a trial then you should seek prior approval to talk about it. This gets to be a judgement call with published studies and completed trials since they might be of interest to our members but too much information might constitute spam or proselytizing.

Also remember that we can't allow such extensive quoting of material that we might be in violation of copyrights.

The limitation on studies is as already mentioned - to block people from using us as a survey pool unless they get pre-approval.

Agreed. This is clearly the way all three of us are moderating this rule and I think we have been pretty consistent in its application. What frequently happens is that a request for participation just "appears" on the site. One of us then will delete any links or contact info and ask the requester to get permission from Peter. Occasionally they do; more frequently they just go away because they think its too much trouble. The HW position is that if it's too much trouble to get permission then the study is not worthy of our time...

Looks like it is ok and that we have not violated the rules.
