Below is a very interesting article I came across on how to classify leaders and followers (especially followers) by personality type. This quote from the article sort of sums it up:
"Kelley [a researcher] identifies followers as either passive or active and as either dependent or independent. Based on the various combinations of characterizations, he then classifies them into five basic types of followers: Conformist; Passive; Alienated; Exemplary; and Pragmatic."I'm sure we will all recognize people we have known or worked with who fit into these types (including maybe yourself), which are defined in more detail in the article.
There are of course numerous studies that have been done on this topic, the characterization of worker personalities and how to manage them, and this approach seems to be just one of the latest. The purpose of this kind of study, which some consider controversial, is assumed to be that different worker personality types require different management styles. (Well, maybe).
Having managed myself, as I'm sure many of you have, I personally have some issues with pigeonholing people in this way, but maybe this approach does have maybe some guideline value (but only that, IMO).
But an interesting article, nonetheless.
