Hello again. I am on my second injection of Firmagon and doing well with it. My PSA went from 448 to 9 in 28 days.

My onc. Dr. Now wants to add taxol to my treatment. I am also on Xgeva. I am worried about long term side effects of the chemo. Can anyone share their experience with Taxol?

No experience with those drugs but that is a heckuva drop in your PSA in 28 days!

I'm not particularly an expert on such things, either, but I do seem to recall hearing several times that chemo, used earlier in the process than previously recommended, was remarkably well tolerated by the younger, healthier patients and showed a clear, significant survival advantage.

It would be Taxotere (docetaxel). It has a much bigger survival advantage if used earlier - IF you have multiple mets. It is well tolerated by most guys I've talked to who've been on it, especially if younger and healthier to begin with. Some guys have rare serious adverse reactions, which your oncologist will tell you about. It's usually an infusion every 3 weeks for 6 cycles. I haven't heard of any lasting side effects, though, but it's a good question for your oncologist.

Yes my dr. Did say Taxol. I have some paperwork that says Taxol as we'll. I thought that the "standard" of treatment was to use Docetaxel. I will look into it further.

Are you in the US? In the US, docetaxel (Taxotere) and cabazitaxel (Jevtana) are approved for PC. I think Taxol (paclitaxel), an older drug, is approved in the UK.

Did battle with the bowdlerizer software which found the word "clit" in "paclitaxel" and starred it out as a dirty word.
