Atul Gawande's four books - Being Mortal, Checklists, Better and Complications. Great insight into the world of a surgeon & the realities of surgery - as well as the treatment of end of life care & medical decision making. Highly recommended.

Just ordered Gettysburg, A Field Guide recommended above - we're headed there in a couple of weeks - first trip in our motorhome!

Like Wilderness, I've read all of these books and recommend them as superbly written observations about medicine and life.

I'm currently reading Handing One Another Along by Robert Coles, on the recommendation of David Brooks, the New York Times columnist.

I mentioned these readings in earlier post on this thread. " Essays and poems Ralph Waldo Emerson". Start with the essay on Self Reliance. Read, study if needed, the words . It is his concept of what a man is and the the subtle and unknowing conspiracy against the man. Due to the paradigm of his time and the difference of todays paradigm, I feel man should be changed to individual…individual, being the operative word, so as to include woman, but more importantly the true meaning of the word individual. It is a stunning gathering of words reflecting that which we all experience if we are true to ourselves.
