Anybody got an idea about THESE HOT FLASHES

So as I have previously posted, I was due for my 3 month Lupron shot on February 6th. That would have began my second year on Lupron. My Oncologist and I agreed that I would take a break from the Lupron.

During the year I did not really suffer from HOT flashes. I had occasional brief periods of warmth, but nothing that was insufferable or bothersome.

BUT, now for the last three weeks I have been having HOT FLASHES. I mean, break out in a sweat, wake me up at night, and no doubt about it. Night or day it doesn't seem to make any difference. At least 4-5 times a day.

Does not seem to be tied to any physical activity. Doesn't happen when I am working out or fishing or outside work or etc.

Just sitting around watching tv, having dinner, relaxing or laying down in bed. And ZING here it comes.

Okay, so I was lucky with these things for the last year, but, what gives with them now.

Anybody have any ideas on this one. Or is it just payback for having an easy year on the drugs?

Every Day is A Bonus, but I could do without HOT BONUS DAYS for sure.

Hi Sonny, I had hot flashes after coming off of HT. I had used estridol (SP?) patches to avoid the hot flashes while on HT. I stopped those when I stopped HT, but it was way to soon. Did you do anything for the hot flashes while on HT? BB

Sounds typical.

I get about 2-3 per day.
For me, they last about 2-3 minutes, so very tolerable.

Do yours last much longer than that?

I think Ferara or estradiol patches are sometimes prescribed, if it is bad.

BB, didn't use anything while I was on HT. Didn't really have to as the HOT flashes never really appeared. Just a little warmth once in a while and it didn't last very long. Never really woke me from sleep or anything. Sometimes I would go for 2-3 days without having that warming feeling.

After 8 years on Lupron I still get some, 3-5, hot flashes a day. Not near as hot as the first three years but still bad. Best of luck . . . Q

Thanks for the input guys. I realize that there are multiple things I can take to possibly minimize the flashes.

What I was really trying to figure out is why they are showing up now, since I am well passed 30 days from my last shot.

I know that the residual effects from Lupron can last a while and that it differs with each individual. I am just trying to wrap my head around the fact that I didn't have these while I was taking the shots. They just appeared out of nowhere.

As another poster wrote, my flashes got warmer after I was off the Lupron for a break, maybe you threshold has just been broken and you are feeling them now rather than before . . . Q

Hi Sonny,
Your T levels are probably fluctuating more while the lupron leaves your system.

I am feeling them that's for sure. Just hope they don't last all that long. I am truly ready for a break from HT.

My hot flashes took awhile to kick in Sonny. I get no sympathy from my wife as she says, "been there, done that" with menopause. Don't like them but there could be worse side effects.

Did you make any other changes in your meds lately? The only hot flashes I ever had are the mild ones you had until recently. One of my theories for my good luck was that it might have something to do with the Prozac (also used, at lower doses, for menopausal hot flashes.)

It could be that there is some other cause for the change in your hot flashes besides your balking at that Lupron shot.

Sonny, no idea why they would have suddenly kicked in.

I've had mine since my T went below the castrate level almost 2 years ago. Megace helps quite a bit, but even with that I have 3-4 a day, and 2-3 a night that wake me up. I've been awakened with sweat running across me, and the sheets uncomfortably damp. Yuck!

There was very recent thread discussing something called clonidine that seemed to help with these, but I don't know anything more about it.

No real advice or insights, but man can I empathize. No fun, no fun at all. I choose to think of them as regular confirmation that my T level is still at a therapeutic level!

My wife and I laugh about them, both of us "enjoying" them, and the strange turns that life takes. I have a peculiar empathy now with post-menopausal women!

Geez! You guys don't give me much to look forward to when my two years of hormone therapy ends. Now, after 1 1/2 years, my hot flashes are coming less often and aren't as severe. I have another 6 months left, and I had hoped that after my last shot, the hot flashes would stop.
