Sue, I'm aware that we chose well when we moved here almost 25 years ago with small children. He never fails to ask how the kids are doing. The melanoma thing was interesting: he took the biopsies, and when the local pathologist came up "undetermined", he had them sent to Mayo for 2nd opinion. I still remember that day too. I got a call at work from his NP, asking me to come in to the office after work. (oh crap). When I got there, I don't think I was in the exam room more than 5 minutes, and he walked in with a file folder and the Merck index under his arm. He shared the diagnosis, showed me the explanation page in Merck, and said, "You have an appointment with Dr. "B" (a topnotch local surgeon) next Tuesday".
It's crazy how much of all of this depends on dumb luck. Picking the right PCP, asking the right questions....frequently without realizing they have to be asked, etc.
