On this day in memory of the centenary of the ANZAC landings at Gallipoli and for the soldiers of Australia and New Zealand who have fought in all the wars and made the supreme sacrifice for our countries. Lest we forget.

A truly tragic event, riddled with ineptitude by the decision makers...I won't forget…. The movie with Mel gibson was ok. But I have seen a few documentaries also that were better. I will read a book on it. I like books.. any suggestions on a good one.

Love NewZealand, like a land outside of time, breathtaking beauty. Never been to Australia, but sometime I plan to..

A truly moving day with tributes to our fallen soldiers and others who made the supreme sacrifice in all wars, commemorated all over the country. Today is the 100 th year since the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli in Turkey.
I was up at 4 am to attend a dawn service in a very small town in New South Wales at 5am. A truly moving experience.
A book called Gallipoli by Peter Fitsimmons is an excellent read.
It is days like today that make me realise how important life is and how it is worth the battle to keep moving forward to fight this sickness. May you all have the same spirit as the remembered today.
We will remember them.
Lest we forget.

Greg, thanks for the reminder. My father (USN veteran from WWII) told me after they visited Australia and spent a day at Cairns, that a man walked up to him on the beach and asked him if (a) he was American, and (b) if he was a WWII veteran. When affirmed, the man said, "You may not understand how grateful the people of Australia are for your fighting the Battle of the Coral Sea. It's not a stretch to say that you saved Australia." My dad, usually not at a loss for words, did not know how to respond.

Australia is also on my bucket list. I'm fascinated by aboriginal art and the spiritual ideas underlying the songlines.

The ANZAC ode

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Could also apply to the less fortunate Pca victims.....

We have a number of U.S. military veterans here on the forum, a number of them having served in war.

I'm certain I speak for all of them when I say: we have every respect and sense of gratitude to all of those troops from the ANZAC nations who served and sacrificed for the cause of freedom.

A salute to them all.

Ahhhh... Altearoa -- land of the long white cloud.

I had a Fulbright to NZ about 6 years ago, and we lived on the south island for about 6 months. One of the most awesome times of my life. On ANZAC day we attended a PACKED showing of the movie, World's Fastest Indian. If you haven't seen it, it's a MUST. about Burt Monro, a kiwi who set a world's land-speed record in Utah on his Indian motorcycle in the 1960s. Anthony Hopkins is brilliant. A must see...
