Best pads for leaks, some new ones

OK, I have tried about any and all pads on the markets, even from the ladies panty liner aisle......
I have found a combination that works best for me. Tena has just introduced male guards with options for light #1, moderate #2 and max leakage #3. #1 and # 3 are new. I find the moderate's will last me all day even with 18 holes of golf. The light version is also good when I am not doing strenuous stuff or drinking less. I can only find moderate inthe stores, CVS, Walgreens etc. Have to order them from the Tena web site.
I use Depends shields (for drips and dribbles) for overnight although the new light Tena one's work almost as well and are not bulky at all.
I don't mean this to be a commercial for either Tena or Depends but if it comes off that way so be it.

I just got some of the tena guards a couple of weeks ago, they are pretty good , wide coverage. Yeah, this is great talking bout pads. None of us thought, probably not too long ago, that we would end up finding such discussions useful. Oh well, have to remember that things could be a lot worse.

Here is part of a post I did in 3/2/2011. I was testing pee pads and weighing them on a lab scale to come up with the optimum combination for my needs.

Here are the results of my pee pad or "Manty Shield" testing.

These are real numbers measured on a Mettler Laboratory balance. They are more useful than the unscientific labels stuck on the packages.
I ran experiments with pads inside diapers so I could see when they leaked without messing my pants. You can't run it to the limit if you are wearing them just inside your regular underwear.

I'll give you two numbers. The first is the maximum safe value; the second is when leakage starts. Divide by 30 to get ounces.
Your mileage my vary.

  • Depend Underwear for Men Super Plus, Size S/M: 450 ml.....600 ml
  • Depend Boost insert:... 200 ml (must be worn with above)
  • Depend Men's Guard:.. 150 ml.... 175 ml
  • Tena pads for men:..... 140 ml.... 150 ml
  • CVS Protect. pad Max:. 160 ml.... 175 ml
  • Options by Assurance:.. 90 ml..... x
  • Half Poise Pad:............. 80 ml.... 110 ml
  • Half Tena Serenity:....... 30 ml..... 45 ml
  • Carefree mini pads:...... 15 ml..... 20 ml

Jeff, 2013? there are new products awaiting testing in your lab, Tena guards for instance. You sort of messed up your testing capability as the emmiter has reduced capacity these days. you might have to wear the pads a couple of days to make up for that.

Since my leaking is getting worse (2010 ART damage is getting worse by the day, last cystoscope - my bladder neck looks like a still from WWI trenches), I had to give up on the Tena standard weights and go to Depends guards exclusively.

I used to experiment with them all, but the Depend shields were a total waste, gave them all away.

You might want to try the Tena #3. They hold a lot more than the original "moderates" which are now #2.

Jeff, perhaps you will want to test the new #! and #3 Tenas.

Although I have posted this before I also suggest using Jockey pouch boxer briefs with the horizontal flap. Much easier to get it out than the regular with the vertical flap. I order them on line and also recently switched to the polyester version. They hold the pads closer since they have some stretch and thus less possibility for leakage. And if you are into colors you can get them in a vast assortment but not "pink".

142 gave me his Depends Shields just before I had my AUS installed. After activation, I have been wearing them exclusively and they seem to do the job for me so I am staying with them.

My husband had surgery at the Mayo in February...the nurses gave him (and recommended) pamper diapers size 3 because they "cradled" the important parts. They are used like pads. But for me - I like the cute Tickle Me Elmo designs!

All my testing was done in-situ: in place and in actual use. I did not merely put them on a table and add water. I even recorded the mode of failure, e.g., bursting from the side, bottom seepage, etc.

Back then, 2009 -2010, I was leaking 2000 ml per day so I had plenty of material to work with. That was before I had the sling installed.

Now, thankfully, I only generate about 5-10 ml per day which, depending upon the weather and relative humidity, is at Sub-observable leakage level, (SOL). Meaning it evaporates faster than I leak. Most of the time I just shove a handkerchief down there and that's enough to keep my undies dry, increase my confidence, and improve my package profile. :-)

I am happy to state my high volume testing days are over.

I started out, right after the RALP, wearing the Depends underwear. Initially, I went through as many as 7-8 per day but eventually got that number down to 3-4 per day by doing my kegels. When my dripping didn't get better, my uro referred me to pelvic floor rehab, which I went through for almost a year. That got me down one Depends underwear per day usually but sometimes I needed two. I usually leaked 400-500ml per day, rarely up to 600ml. (Got the idea of weighing my wet pads from Worried Guy.)

I got tired of leaking even that much and got an AUS (AMS 800) implanted late last summer. Since then, I've worn Depends Shields in my briefs and one is usually adequate for wearing all day. I don't wear any pads at night now. EXCEPT when I get a respiratory infection which causes me to cough all day and night. Then I have to get back into the Depends underwear because every cough produces a spurt of pee the shield can't hold. In that case, I may need as many as two underwear per day (even at night).

I have noticed in the past couple of weeks that I sometimes have urgency problems when I go out to run errands in the afternoon. Even though I empty my bladder before leaving home, I can get the urge to go again in about 30 minutes and, if I can't quickly get to a restroom, I wet not only my shield and briefs but also my pants. The urge is so strong, the AUS cuff can't hold the pee back. I'm going to start switching my shield for a guard in the briefs when I go out. The shield will only handle a few drips and a spurt or two will flood it. I'm hoping the guards will hold that much before it overflows. Don't know why the sudden urgency problem - reminds me of my pre-PCa days when I suffered urgency because of BPH.

maybe go to a gp or uro to get checked for UTI?

Thank you, Knotreel, but a UTI isn't causing this infrequent urgency. I've had three UTIs since my prostatectomy and I know what those feel like. A UTI doesn't give me intermittent urgency but a constant urge to go (and little to nothing comes out). This recent urgency comes on rather quickly and pee DOES come out, either in the restroom urinal or my pad if I don't move fast enough. It happened 2-3 times in the past two weeks; so it's not a constant problem - just a new development. I'm taking note of my activities in the hour or so before it's likely to happen to see if I'm doing something that's contributing to the problem, like drinking lots of water with my lunch. Strangely enough, it's just an afternoon thing - doesn't happen in the morning.

I'm going through the same thing, but mostly in the morning. You're not crazy. I thought about seeing the uro and getting some meds for it, but the side effects are probably worse than the problem.

I guess I'll just deal with it, but let us know if you find a solution.

Jonathan, I will post here if I find a solution. This is not a situation where misery loves company and I hope you can find the cause of yours and fix it.

For me, this recent development of urgency is more curious than it is devastating. Compared to three years of heavy leaking after my RALP, it's no more than a minor annoyance. I did go out yesterday in the early afternoon but I didn't eat lunch or drink water at noon as I usually do. Again, in the 5-minute drive back home from my errand, I got a feeling of extreme urgency. I was able to hold it until I got home and relieve myself. So, the problem isn't caused by the 8oz glass of water I drink with my lunch suddenly flooding my bladder. It's caused by something else and I'm very interested in figuring it out. It's odd that it happens only once a day, if at all, and in the early afternoon when I'm away from home. The rest of the time, I'm good.
