Urologist felt nodule during DRE

Last week my urologist felt a nodule during my DRE. He ordered and MRI and a urine and PSA test. My PSA came back .54. My question is because my PSA level is so low is there a need to still go have the MRI? Thank you to all who share! Bucjeyefan54

Welcome to HW.

You might want to go ahead with it. While your PSA doesn't indicate anything really bad, there could be a prostate nodule or other issue that may justify a quick look.

Likely you URO was just being cautious and order the standard tests when he felt the bump. What he ordered is fairly standard in a case like this.

Maybe you should put in a call and get his opinion on doing the MRI.

Did he do an ultrasound first? Often, it's just a calcification that can safely be ignored, especially with a PSA of .54.

No ultrasound if prostate. I was referred by GP due to pain in left testicle and blood in my urine when looked under a microscope. The Urologist did a ultrasound of testicle and bladder and kidneys and said there is a small cyst on my left testicle but says it was just Epidiemytus? He then asked if my GP did a DRE or a PSA and I told him no. It was then he did the DRE exam and said immediately I can feel a nodule. I did the PSA the same day and as I have said results were very low. I want to be safe but an MRI costs a lot of money so that's why I am asking for opinions on what to do? He did say 50 percent of nodules are Cancerous and my moms brother, is struggling with Prostate Cancer now. Once again I look forward to responses and thank you for responding.

MRIs are expensive. I wonder why he didn't do an U/S of your prostate while he was at it. Maybe you can explain your financial concerns, and ask him for less expensive options. I'm thinking that if it appears to be just a calcification or a cyst - the most likely scenario - he can repeat the US on a follow-up visit to see if there are any changes, and if your PSA is still low. It's not impossible to have PC with a PSA that low, but it would be highly unusual.

Thank you for the reply Allen! Plus I am 6'11,340 pounds so fitting in an MRI if very uncomfortable as well. I was shocked when he ordered the MRI! He felt the nodule right away so not sure if that makes him more suspicious or just overly cautious!
