I've never seen this discussed here, and I don't know how long this forum has been around, but in 2007 one of my favorite singer/songwriters, Dan Fogelberg, died of prostate cancer. He was only 56, the same age I am now.

Anyway, don't know why I felt compelled to bring this up but this is my favorite song of his. He had a lot of big hits, this isn't one of them, but it's a beautiful song. I wish he was still with us.

If I remember correctly, he was diagnosed at about age 50 or so with an advanced stage. The same with fellow musician Frank Zappa in the 1990's. I watched the spin about his "recovery", but little was said further until he died almost without any warning to his fans.

IMHO, this is a problem with psa not being tested until age 50, at the earliest, and these guys having had it for years before then. A shame. I think that I have every album (on digital now) that Fogelberg released.

Thank you for sharing this It is a beautiful tribute. Gary is also 56 and I am doubtful he will find a tx to get him to 57, but we keep hoping.

Thanks geetarman. It turns out my favorite Dan Fogelberg song is 'the leader of the band'. I had forgotten that he died of PC.

One of my brothers, who happens to live in Peoria, is also a big Dan Fogelberg fan. He recently pointed out that this monument can be found in Peoria:

Geetar: i don't see anyone mentioning it, but as i remember it, his last album, LOVE IN TIME, was lovingly released posthumously, and includes some GREAT stuff. a very fitting final album. and the last song, "BIRDS" is eerily fitting. maybe you already knew all this

Nice. Thanks for stirring up some good memories of Peoria for me. I used to go up there and always had good times. Peoria Rivermen hockey games in the middle of winter, the WPBA women's pool tournament every summer at the casino. I always meant to look into Fogelberg more. Spotify, here I come!

This also was my favorite Fogelberg song. We had 2 of his songs in our wedding (Longer and Since You Asked) he did not write this one). His death really saddened my wife and I. I remembered thinking then that it was a matter of time I would find out that I had prostate cancer (my father died of it and I had creeping PSA's.

Glad y'all enjoyed it. That guy had such a beautiful voice. On crisp fall days I love to put on headphones and listen to the entire Netherlands album. It just gives me chills.

His widow is donating the profits from the song "Sometimes A Song" to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

I am a big fan of Fogelberg too. Saw him in New Haven, CT in the 80's. Not to be morbid, but my favorite author, Vince Flynn, lost his battle with PC at age 47. PSA testing should start no later that 45.

Vince Flynn was one of my favorites too.  I remember reading the acknowledgement page on his second to last novel when I learned of his struggles with PC.  By the time I got his last novel he had passed, and I had just been diagnosed positive.  That was when I had my first cold shiver reality.

Fogelberg lived in Durango ("I live in Colorado, when I'm not in some hotel") and may not have had too many treatment options there.

Aggressive disease treatment failed then all he had was 3-5 years hormone mono-therapy, is my speculative guess.

Dan's widow Jean has worked hard to keep Dan's legacy alive. She keeps his website up to date. She also has a website for caregivers calls "Don't Lose Heart." It is for all caregivers. Listen to the song, "This Heart" if you get the chance.
