Cystourethroscopy for a Stricture

Had slow stream / painful urination for a few days so I went in to see the Uro yesterday and had an unexpected Cystourethroscopy. Yikes. Pain was a 15+ Had to peel me off the ceiling.

Doc said he hadn't seen a stricture that thick is some time. He had trouble opening it and tried several different times and almost gave up. He gave me the option to try one more time (as I'm covered in sweat trembling from the pain) with a balloon which was likely to be more painful than the previous attempts or he could schedule me for a surgery ASAP.

OK one last time. Well that's when the pain scale went through the roof although it only took a minute or so once it started working. He confirmed everything with one last scope and gave a thumbs up. Just to be safe he put me back on a catheter until Monday to allow any swelling to go down. Oh Joy but I'm grateful to have avoided an all out surgery.

Next time I will listen to my pharmacist daughter and take the two pain pills before a procedure.

I know the pain!

I had a Fossa navicularis (stricture about 3/8" from tip of penis) caused from scare tissue by a huge catheter I had in for 10 days after my robotic surgery. I occurred a couple of weeks after my catheter was removed. Called my urologist he said come on in. The uro and a pretty young resident was there and he told me to drop my pants and lay back on the exam table. He squirted a little lidocaine jelly and waited a minute or two then preceded to dilate the structure. Even though he took it slowly over a course of a minute or two I screamed like a baby! It was like tearing apart a scar and was extremely excruciating painful. The lidocaine jelly didn't help at all. He dilated it to about 1/4" and left the tool there for about 5 minutes and then removed it. Then the spooky part was seeing bright red blood come pouring out from the tip. It was far bloodier then I thought it would be.

Next he gave me a plastic tool that looks like a chop stick and told me that I need to dilate myself twice a day until the stricture relaxes. The first couple of weeks were slow going and painful even with the lidocaine jelly, but after a couple more weeks everything became normal.

I did have the lidocaine gel but it didn't seem like it did much for me other than burn going in. The slow stream / painful urination was going on for several days so everything was already a little tender.

The stricture was at the point of re-attachment so it felt like he was going in 2 feet in every time he tried another instrument.

Sounds like strictures can come back and if mine does I won't do another procedure without being under some form of anesthesia. I would hope he would even suggest it given the results of the first one.
