The June 29th Reluctant Brotherhood Telephone Support conference call will be on the topic of "Beginning the Conversation".

This presentation informs individuals not only how to complete advance directive documents such as Living Will and Healthcare Power of Attorney but how to talk with your doctor and your loved ones about the type of care you want. At any time in your life, you may be unable to communicate your healthcare choices as a result of an injury or serious illness. Having a plan will make it easier for you, your doctor, and your loved ones to ensure your wishes are honored.

This session will provide you with peace of mind in the knowledge that your wishes are known and your loved ones have the gift of prior planning. In this life we prepare for everything, college, marriage, a baby, retirement but we never begin a conversation about the end. Take the first step, begin the conversation to educate, prepare, communicate, document and empower.

The call will be at 8pm EDT on June 29.

Hey Rick,
This is an interesting discussion. I've lived it from a reverse order in my step fathers lung cancer and my mother cervical cancer. The most difficult decisions are end of life decisions including the "Do Not Resuscitate" document. I will try to make this one to gather more information for those I know that have had to make these calls.

You will be very welcome Tony .... we have to thank Dominic for coming up with the program and arranging - the presentation was delivered in person to his local UsTOO group, and D. thought it would make a good plenary session for us.

If you have the opportunity, please let your local guys know about this.

Hope you are doing well. I listened to the Ann Katz presentation .... one thing made me smile. Mike Scott once challenged me on my observation that PCa provides way more treatment choices than most other cancers .... he let it slide when Dr. Katz said the same.

This is a valuable, important discussion to have. Thanks for sharing, ardeee.

Many people have thought about this but not acted on it. The "Beginning the Conversation" toolkit looks helpful, and I hope that others take advantage.

Another approach I'm familiar with is the free online "Five Wishes." https://www.agingwithdignity.org/five-wishes.php

The Five Wishes approach lets your family and doctors know:
1. Who you want to make health care decisions for you when you can't make them.
2. The kind of medical treatment you want or don't want.
3. How comfortable you want to be.
4. How you want people to treat you.
5. What you want your loved ones to know.

I'd like to join with you, ardeee, in encouraging anyone who has not yet documented their wishes to look into one or the other of these toolkits.

While I agree the DNR is the tough part, with or without prostate cancer, it's also important just to leave a trail for spouse and those with custodial duties of how many insurance policies and with whom, ditto for bank accounts, investments, passwords, etc.
