PSA score

Hi, my dad is 73 and had a sore back recently, he has always been really fit and healthy. I forced him to the GP to have some bloods taken. He has a PSA of 5,400 and the GP told him she had never come across or heard of a score as high. This has made him panic and stop eating which is not helping. Due to see the Urologist tomorrow. I have been looking at some of the comments on this forum and most of the scores are lower than my dad's. You will understand that the tears are streaming down my face as I now presume he is about to die anytime. I am really confused about all the scores and treatments and I love my dad so much. How can I help him? can treatment work and prolong his life? Heart broken!

That is a scary high number. But, he isn't going to die today or anytime soon. There is a lot the doctors can do to keep the beast at bay. There are a number of treatments that will help, reduce his pain and give him many more years.

Getting to the URO is the right thing. Likely he'll need some tests and he'll get some medication to help. You can help him best by telling him it is treatable, there is hope and help him get to the doctor's appointments.

So sorry you are going through this Dove. But as others have said, its not at all hopeless. This disease, even the very aggressive forms, are most often treated as a chronic illness and he can have many more years of good life, in the hands of the right doctors.
I would see the urologist, and i would also find the best Medical Oncologists who focus on Prostate Cancer, than you can find. If you tell us where you dad lives, you may get recommendations.

If at all possible, try to get him into one of the major cancer centers, like MSKCC, Johns Hopkins, Cleveland Clinic, or Mayo where he will benefit from the most recent advances, of which there are many
