Ha Guys and Gals
As a G9 I haven't posted in a while. FYI, I'm still doing well and presently my PSA is 0.217 and holding.
But, this is about my Dad. He was diagnosed with PCa at age 89. He is now 98 and still very heathy in mind and body. He was put on Lurpron for the first 3 years. This dropped his PSA and he was taken off it. Now at 98 years old his PSA is now over 200. Dr's want him to go on Casodex and Lurpron again.
Personally, knowing the side effects I'm not for it. Doctors mentioned another drug similar to Lurpron that has less side effects but can't remember the name. I'm 2000 miles away from him and hoping my Healing Well family could help me a bit.
Is there a hormone drug with less side effects then Lurpron? And would you recommend it to your 98 year old Father?

Hey Bert... I'm not sure I'd do anything that would interfere with his QOL.

Have you talked to him about this?

His long life bears well for you. What are your fathers wishes on this development?

Probably using Xtandi as a lone suppression would produce less side effects. But I'd guess that any hormonal suppression is to expect SE's that we all know about. For a faster PSA response Firamgon (degarelix) is an option.

98yo is definitely a touchy subject but if he is otherwise healthy intervention is reasonable. If he is planning on living to 110 then intervention to a 200 PSA is needed.

Hi Bert,
How well did tolerate tx the first go round? At 200 one would assume mets? The effects of PCa May be worse than the SEs from tx...just a thought.

Maybe he was talking about Firmagon. An elderly man (93) in one of my support groups takes only bicalutamide to keep it in check, and doesn't mind it. I know that people in his generation often automatically go with whatever the doctor suggests, but maybe you can convince him that he does have a right to choose what he wants.

My grandfather was treated for his PC between ages 83 and his death at 93. If I remember correctly, he had three-month Lupron shots at the beginning, and I believe towards the end, it was just Casodex. Towards the end, the PC had spread to kidney, and he needed a bag, but he had no other complaints. So QOL is important.

He had the hot flashes, but his just shrugged it off. He didn't die of PC, it was heart failure that did it.

Casodex sounds like the mildest ADT out there.
