We are now at the time of year when many of us are about
to take our summer vacations (or maybe we have just returned from one) and the issue of planning for them is either before us or we have recently done it.
Since such planning is now on our minds (or recently has been) it seemed useful to bring up the topic of what
special considerations the PCa in our lives might bring to our own vacation planning.
This won't be a discussion of vacation planning in general, as I'm sure we've all had plenty of experience at doing that, but rather of those
special steps that having the beast in our lives makes us take into consideration when planning our summer getaways.
The list below of things to consider are things I gathered from reading a number of web articles on "cancer factors in vacation planning," and hopefully of use to some of you.
Please feel free to post and add some of your own thoughts on things that you have also found useful in your own planning, if you don't see them in the list below. (I'm sure there are some very good ones that I have missed).
(Remember, these are vacation planning tips that especially involve taking PCa into consideration).
TIPS:
Confirm that your vacation dates fit conveniently into your ongoing treatments, if any
Is it safe for you to fly? (From a website: "air travel is not recommended for 10 days after surgery, along with the risk of lymphedema, or swelling in the extremities for those who have had lymph nodes removed")
Plans to control your diet during your vacation?
Decide ahead of time whether certain physical activities while on vacation might not be a good idea (such as volleyball games with relatives too soon after surgery, getting a whole lot of suntan prior to or just after getting RT, etc.)
Meds in general: bring along a few more than you technically need, as backup
Special meds: make needed arrangements (special traveling case, etc.) for meds with special requirements (to be kept cold, etc.). Also, some sites advise having a letter from your doctor explaining your need for your bottles of meds, syringes, needles, etc., especially if going through customs
Consider bringing extra prescription(s) in case your meds are lost or stolen
Confirm that your meds, needles, etc. will not be damaged by movement in a traveling car, plane, etc.
If blood clotting is a possible side effect of any meds you are taking, take frequent traveling breaks, get out and move around often, and avoid sitting in the car for long periods of time
Will immunizations be an issue?
Stay well hydrated and wash hands frequently
Have emergency contact information for your doctor(s) back home
Be aware of location of nearest hospital where you will be staying (in case of emergency)
Ditto for nearest ambulance service
Verify that insurance coverage exists for above two entities
Have available list of all your meds, your insurance info, and contact info for your doctor(s) back home
If you use travelers' insurance, verify that it does NOT have exclusion clause for traveling cancer patients
Have portable urinary bottle available in car (if you think you will need it)
Have first aid kit in car
If travel fatigue becomes a problem, have plan for where you can stop and rest (either in car or where you will be staying)
If desired, tell your lab ahead of time where you will be if you want your test results forwarded (or maybe you don't!)
Confirm that where you will be staying has Internet access (if you want it) (Or maybe just for HW PC?) Those are of course just a few. As suggested, post to tell us of any others that you have found especially useful when planning a vacation with PCa in mind.
