Hello Guys, I am trying to decide on Implant surgery and need some information. I live about 225 miles from Houston and I go to Houston for major medical treatment and to me this is major. I am 65 year old, had prostate cancer detected in August 2014, removed October 2014 by Dr Slawin @ Vanguard Urologic Institute , nerves were spared but the ED continues. Oral meds do nothing, Muse did not work, started Tri-mix injections, was using + 30 units but the after pain was pretty bad, switched to Bi-mix plus a 20 mg Cialis to get a satisfactory erection. I hate the injections, not painful just make me very nervous and the anxiety of the failure causes a "race to the finish line" .
Does anyone have any experience with implant surgery at Vanguard Urologic Institute and / or Dr. Peter Hihn that you are willing to share. I am very pleased with the prostate surgery and care that I got afterwards but I did not even know that they did implant surgery, no idea how many they have done, successful ratio to repairs and etc.
I have heard about Dr Robert J. Cornell and spoke to one of his patients that really praised him highly. I would really appreciate any input that you may have concerning this, either good or bad. Thanks very much

Dave,

I assume that was a typo and you had surgery October 2014? If so, it's way too soon for an implant. It can take up to 2 years for erectile function to recover, sometimes more. I hope you are continuing with penile rehab. You didn't mention the pump, which should be part of it. Even without erections, continued blood flow from those measures will help penile tissues be more responsive when and if the nerves wake up, and may protect against penile shrinkage.

Tall Allen, No that is not a typo, Oct 2014 was surgery. Patience is not my strong point as you can see. I had more or better response shortly after surgery. I am extremely frustrated over all of this.
Yes I am using the pump twice daily as advised by my Dr. , doing the injections which I hope will promote tissue health and prevent shrinkage.
I hear what you say about 2 years and I was told to expect ED for a period of 6 mo to 2 years. In my mind I was going to be a "6 mo" at the worst but here I am at 1 year and do not see any improvement yet.
I do not mean to sound ungrateful as my PSA has been < .006 NG/ML for 3 consecutive test, my incontinence has improved tremendously and my wife has been great so I do realize that I am truly blessed .

You typed "October 2015" - impossible without a time machine.

Maybe the following study will give you encouragement. Researchers at Memorial Sloan Kettering recently found "In patients experiencing erectile dysfunction at 12 mo, the probability of recovering EF at 24, 36, and 48 mo was 22%, 32%, and 40%." So it's possible even 4 years later.

Now, if it eventually kicks back in, recovered erection quality may not be all you hoped for, and you may still want to go for the implant later anyway. Also, if the bimix+cialis is working for you for now, you may get more used to it over time. You are indeed blessed to have an accommodating wife.

I used Dr. Larry Lipshuktz at Bayor, Houston Medical Complex. Google him for more details. I got what I consider as excellent results.
