Mans best friend

Hello All,my 8yr old yellow Lab ,Booda,has been blind 1 year from a retinal disease.(DNA).He has been my constant companion since Iv retired 5 yrs. ago.He adjusted well.His last pheasant hunt was 1 year ago.These dogs are almost human,I swear.He counted on me & Wifey this past year to help him adapt.He navigates our home and wooded 1 acre lot like he can see.Booda senses something with me and he jumps in bed with us at night. Yeah 100 lbs. of Lab.Maybe my tension of the last few months with testing etc. have him suspicious and he feels the vibes.Dont Know.But in the end he is my best friend.My Wife counts too.

Dogs are amazing creatures. I was raised by one (Tubby) and have lived with them all my life. I met my wife to-be shortly after she moved the the United States from England in 1980 to do a couple of college degrees. At first we were housemates along with two other 30-something adults plus one housemate's standard poodle and wife-to-be's dog, Wellington Boot, Esq.

Welly was a little fox-like dog -- the natural dog to which all dog breeds would revert if they bred without human intervention. He was smarter than either of us and lived to a very old age -- almost 20. We bought a house in 1992 when Welly was very old. He was blind and nearly totally deaf. We were afraid that moving to a new house would be the end of him. But within a couple of hours of moving in, and in spite of all the piled up boxes and furniture, Welly knew the layout of the first floor. He knew where his bed was and where to find his food dish and water bowl. By nightfall he knew his way to the second floor and our (his) new bedroom. He spent the better part of a year in his new quarters before moving on to wherever good dogs go.

There are a lot of dog people on this site. I always liked the saying "be the person your dog thinks your are". I had two dogs and had to put both down this past year to cancer. I feel lost without them.
