Never be scared, always be confident!

I apologise for the length of this post, but I just want to share something my 10 year old grand-daughter wrote.

This amazing young lady has a mother, my daughter, who is fighting secondary breast cancer with mets in her liver and is aware of my situation.

She has a natural talent for writing. It is hard to believe that a young girl can be so insightful.

This item was not part of any school work, just something that she wanted to write. I have read this 100 times, and every time I have had a tear in my eye.

Coming of Age

New born
Hello, open your eyes for the first time and take your place. This is where you’re supposed to be; softly tucked in your first bed. Your first laugh sounds quietly. You can blurrily see your mum and dad smiling, a tear running from their eye and a happy sigh coming from their mouth. “Welcome to the world. Never be scared, always be confident.” They cry.

3 years old
Adjust your eyes to the bright sunlight. This is where you’re supposed to be; warmly squeezed in the swing seat. You feel grown up because it’s your first time on the swings by yourself. You feel the sunshine on your back. Your mum smiles as she watches you push and pull your legs back and forth. She covers her mouth with her hand and gasps, “My baby is all grown up.”


5 years old
Here you are and here you’ll stay. This is where you’re supposed to be; safely comforted in your first classroom. Don’t feel scared, feel confidant. Your teacher has a warm smile on her face. Miss Elle. Her young eyes look all across the room. She locks eyes with you, and immediately you like her. She walks over to you and says, “Welcome to Kindergarten.”

9 years old
You open your eyes and walk up the driveway. This is where you’re supposed to be; slowly walking in front of your house. Your bike is covered in spider webs. You haven’t ridden it in forever. You walk over to it and hold the handles. As it creeks, you wheel it up to the path. The bell is rusted and the pedals are dirty. You feel nervous, but that doesn’t stop you from pushing off of the path. Your dad steps outside and smiles as you ride off.



13 years old
Here you stand, waiting for your parents to say goodbye. This is where you’re supposed to be; standing anxiously but happily in front of your first high school. Your parents smile, walk you to the office and say goodbye. Now it’s all you. The principle walks out. He has loose but healthy skin. His smile shifts to you. “Your first day?” he asks. You nod. “Don’t be scared, be confident.” He grins. You walk to class with your chin held high.

16 years old
Your hands are sweaty and your knees are trembling. This is where you’re supposed to be; sitting encouragingly in your first drivers seat. Your sweaty hands clench the steering wheel. The driving tester that’s sitting beside you puts his hand on your shoulder. “Don’t be nervous, be confident.” He says. You slowly push on the accelerator and steer around the course. “I’d say you passed.” He smiles.


20 years old
You are here and you are unique in your own qualities. This is where you’re supposed to be; happily snuggled with a group of friends. Glasses of champagne clink together continuously. Your 20th party is special. More people show up and give you hugs and cards. You are happy. You are surrounded. Surrounded by positive connections. Your smile seems to be contagious.

30 years old
Your eyes are wide and your teeth are showing. This is where you’re supposed to be; safely standing with boxes in your arms. You pack the last boxes into the moving van. Your parents walk out with two more boxes. You look at the boxes, and they have some things from your early childhood. Your eyes fill up with tears. “Don’t be scared, be confident.” They cry.
You smile and hug them.



50 years old
You are smiling. You eyes are full of light. This is where you’re supposed to be; warmly sitting in your special chair at your work. Your work is exactly what you wanted as a young child. It even has some better qualities. You keep chanting in your head, “What did I do to deserve this?” your mind is full of thoughts, happy thoughts. You have thoughts of your family, who supports you. You have thoughts of your friends, who work with you. You smile.

70 years old
Your skin is loose. This is where you’re supposed to be; nervously waiting for your results. Let me re-frays that... confidently waiting for your results...Your cancer results. “Don’t be scared, be confident.” You whisper. You finally get your results back. You close your eyes and take a deep breath. You look at it. CLEAR. It reads. You sigh in relief. A smile spreads across your face. You will never forget your life quote, ‘Never be scared. Always be confident.’

As a postscript, it just so happens that I had my latest PSA test drawn today. Result in a couple of days. Do I feel scared? - how can I? Young Ainslee has told me to be confident.

I think I have a lot to learn from this young lady.

10 years old???? Good golly, I work with ten year olds every day and most can't put two sentences together with clarity. That darling girl gives us all hope for a genuinely bright, empathetic and loving generation to follow. She's a very gifted child Chask. Of that YOU can be confident. THANK YOU for sharing this! Yes we picked up on that! I think my daughter (Ainslee's mum) might have other ideas on that.😊

Awesome writing skills for a 10 year old! She should seriously consider blogging (with parental oversight of course) to get some visibility with that kind of talent at such a young age. She would have quite an audience over time.

Haven't you all heard that 30 is the new 21?

Her writing reminds me of my faith lessons, "this where you're supposed to be," I'm not where I am by accident, but by design (yes, even the bad parts such as PCa), to help those around me. "Don't be scared be confident," - i.e. have faith no matter what. Quite a wise young lady you have there...

THANK YOU, for sharing Ainslee's writings! Yes, brought a tear to my eyes as well. Having been on ADT2 since October 1, 2012, I do find it isn't hard to draw tears! I've always had a soft spot in my heart.

You must be very proud of little Ainslee, as she seems to be an amazing young lady!
