Hello All,
I had a PSA two months ago that was 3.73. My doctor suggesting I take tamsulosin for 30 days. I took it and it went down to 2.10. Im 38 years old. He said I should get biopsy. I have had PSA's the past two years and the following ranges have occurred:

Emory 2.10 (April 2, 2016) took tamsulosin for 30 days.

Cancer Center 3.73 (March 3, 2016)

Emory: 3.36 (February 2016)

Cancer Center 1.4 (May 2015)

Eagles Landing Family Practice 3.2 (February 2015)

I wonder why my PSA keeps fluctuating.

Your fluctuating PSA and urinary symptoms are common symptoms of prostatitis. Sometimes the digital rectal exam reveals that the prostate feels hard because of the inflammation. I don't think it's wise for a 38-yo to have a biopsy (which carries risks) before trying to resolve the more obvious cause with a round of antibiotics. Often, however, antibiotics don't work and relapsing and remitting prostatitis is something one just lives with.

Also, avoid orgasm or bike riding within 2 days before your next PSA test.

Hello,
I will listen to that advice because when I had the 3.7 PSA I had sex with wifey two hours prior to the blood work. Also, I don't feel like any symptoms. I don't get up at night to urinate or have to go on a consistent basis. I do notice when I have my yearly physical it says urinary tract infection.

Why are you taking tamsulosin if you don't have urinary symptoms? That's what it's for.

Sex two hours before biopsy? That'll do it.
Also, don't jump from lab to lab, they have different testing methods. That could account for part of the variation as well.

Hello Tall Allen,
I was told to take the tamsulosin when my PSA for my physical exam read 3.7. I told the doctor I didnt have any symptoms or anything and he wanted to see if my PSA score would go down if he prescribed tamsulosin, which it went down to 2.10.
