This new study reminds me of the infrastructure projects that the government initiates during recessions. Work that's not needed but is done anyway, because it creates, or justifies, jobs.
It's my opinion only, but the USPSTF has proven itself, with their last proclamation about
the lack of usefulness of PSA screening for the general population, and the same genius proclamation about
mammograms some years ago, for women under age 50, to be a useless waste of time, effort and money, serving special interests.
If not for mammogram screening of women under 50, I would have less family members alive today. Go to community.breastcancer.org, and see how many women in their 40s, and 30s are going thru breast cancer treatment, how on earth with that knowledge, can any government body , tasked with serving the people, make such a proclamation.
And for the 1000th time, how many of us would be in dire straits, or not around at all, without routine screening f PSA . Not all of us. But a lot. Surely enough of us to justify screening.
It's been said already a number of times, but it's worth repeating. The test doesn't result in over treatment. Lack of education, of both Drs and patients result in over treatment,
As far as the anxiety that PSA screening of UNDIAGNOSED men in the general population causes , well, tough Sh!t, life is hard sometimes. It's better than the anxiety of stage 4 PC that could have been prevented.
Is it perfect? No. But until there is something better than screening the general population, like predicting with great accuracy who is in danger, it's all we've got. No government body should take it away from us.
There, I've put some thought into it.
