Hi guys,
I recently finished 39 sessions of radiation. In the most part it was OK. Some fatigue, I continued to work for most of the time. This was until 2 weeks before I finished. I started to get pain when urinating and pain rectum after a bowl motion. Whilst the urination pain was bearable the rectum pain would be extreme. The doctors prescribed some pain medication (endone). This reduced some of the pain. My problem is that I continue to have pain 1 week after completing the Tx. Has anyone experienced this and have an experience on how long it will last?

I didn't experience pain from external beam radiation, but did have some minor side effects mainly increased frequency and at times a little gassy. These all went away within about a month after the last fraction. You may just have to be a bit more patient, but stay diligent.

It can take awhile for all that to go away. A month or two. A little more patience, but if it gets worse, complain to the doctor.

Increased frequency and urgency have stayed with me since treatment and from time to time a little recital bleeding. I did end up getting the GI doc to treat some issues last year.

A little walking, and lots of water help.

I think you may find that an NSAID like naproxen actually works better for this kind of pain. The pain is a result of inflammation and it will go away as soon as the inflammation subsides. Pyridium (available OTC) is good for the burning while peeing (careful - it stains). Anusol with cortisone or Canasa (Rx) may help with the rectal pain. It should subside in a few weeks or up to a couple of months at most .

I agree NSAIDs might be better. Endone (Oxycodone) will cause bowel problems ie. major constipation! You might want to try daily stool softeners (Docusate Sodium) and some type of fiber (psyllium).

Did not have any pain but had rectal bleeding a year after RT which I had treated and it's now pretty much gone. Same with urgency. IMRT is known to have delayed SEs. Your RO should be able to explain rectal pain.
