We wanted to have a consistent team, get second opinions, and take advantage of the top specialists in Boston. The VA in our area of MA is good, but since we'd been paying a lot for Medicare supplement already, we wanted to be able to see a lot of people. Mass General is the umbrella hospital for our local urology group.
As for getting the shots at the VA, there's zero charge for them there, no co-pay, no hassle. (The VA would've delivered them to my husband's urologist, but it was easier to go to the VA.) We've paid for the highest level allowed for Part D in case down the road my husband needs some drug not covered by the VA, but right now they cover everything at no charge. My husband hasn't had the experience of un-returned phone calls, wait times, or any of that, but as I said, some of the VA specialists are retired from private practice, work part-time, and so forth So for highly specialized care, our regular Medicare plus supplement has been good.
