Thanks for this site. My husband's PSA has been slowly rising over the past two years. Six months ago it was 6 and now it is 9. He has had two sets of biopsies, the last one ultrasound guided which showed no malignancy. I am curious as to why rising PSA and negative biopsy. It does show an abnormal area on ultrasound which I am hoping is severe prostatitis. Has anyone else had rising PSA with negative biopsies. We will be seeing urologist in two weeks, he will probably suggest another biopsy. Thanks again so much for this site, lots of info. My husband is sixty-seven years old, great shape.

A couple of reasons come to mind - first they just missed the PC, the normal 12 core biopsy is somewhat random, he many not have PC, or something else is rising the PSA.

When you see your URO, ask about other biopsy methods, saturation, MRI guided, etc.

Need more info, what was the PSA prior to six months ago?

A steady rise over time is indicative of PC, compared to rapid a increase due to prostatitis, which usually has symptoms associated with it. Is he symptom free?

Enlarged prostate? any activity prior to PSA test that would cause an increase?

A standard ultrasound won't provide any information on malignancies.

Look into color doppler ultrasound guided or MRI fusion targeted technology to help map suspicious areas, or a trans-perineal biopsy, which can access areas not available on a standard biopsy

I second Fauntleroy's reply. I had 2 biopsies (6 core and 18 core) and an MRI and all was negative. My PSA rose from 3.9 to 6.3 in 6 months and I did not have BPH or prostatitis. I eventually paid for a color doppler ultrasound and the lesion lit up and we got it. It was farther than the random needles go in and was hidden from the MRI in the transition zone which radiation techs have a hard time seeing anything. This was a year long process for me. Have you had any other test other than the PSA? How about a PSA Free test? A PHI test would be recommended. You have to have a doctor order it but it could be beneficial. -JR

It took them 3 tries to find my cancer...If they want to do a third biopsy, ask for a "saturation biopsy" performed under sedation in a hospital. It will find cancer when it can't be found using the standard 12 core TRUS method.....
