Dad g9 stage 4 problems with urination

I have posted about my dad's situation before. He was diagnosed in october 2016 with g9 stage 4 prostate cancer. He has snce been on firmagon and recently started taxotere. He also went through 2 weeks of radiation to the prostate because his prostate was so large it made urination nearly impossble. It was pretty much completely blocked off. He has had a bladder catheter since october because of this problem. The radiation finished early december and so far he has noticed very little improvement. Radiation made it worse for him for nearly 2 months and he is only now getting back to how he was before radiation. The catheter/utination problems is having a huge impact on his life quality and it is the only thing related to the cancer that keeps him from living life as he used to. He cant walk very far because of pain and discomfort and still has to urinate every hour or so. Do any of you know of something that could help him? I have read many posts on here and never found anyone with the same problem. Because he is stage 4 they wont operate on his prostate.

On a positive note he has responded very well to HT and his psa dropped from 1.7 (it was always low although hos cancer is not ductal or small cell) to 0.06. Would you agree this is a good result even though he started out with a low psa? So far taxotere is going smoothly aswell and we're keeping our fingers crossed and hopes high that we'll have him around for a long time.

Hi kristine-

Usually they would give a man with blockage a TURP or a prostatectomy, which would immediately relieve the blockage. Radiation causes temporary inflammation that would make the blockage worse for a while. As the inflammation subsides, the tumors there are destroyed and get resorbed, and the healthy prostate tissue atrophies, the blockage will reduce. The hormone therapy will also shrink the prostate and provide relief. After a while, it will be much better than it has been for a long time. There's not a lot to do to hasten the de-inflammation. I took naproxen every day after radiation therapy. If he is taking prednisone along with his Taxotere (they often do that), that may help as well.

At this point, he has been treated with radiation to the prostate, so there is no need for surgery - either de-bulks the primary tumor, so it is not necessary to do both.

Yes, that was a great response to the hormone therapy and Taxotere.
