Aleve and bone pain

Having some bone pain three days out from 1st round of Taxotere. Onc. says no Aspirin no Advil when I had infusion. Called his nurse today and she said try some Aleve. I dunno, anybody think that is a bad idea?

I think you should hear it from your oncologist, not a nurse. Aleve (naproxen) is a NSAID, similar to Advil (ibuprofen). If they don't want you taking one, I don't think they'd want you taking the other. The danger is that it thins the blood and suppresses platelet function, which could compound that effect of Taxotere. I don't know for sure, but extravasation may be a problem as well. Something like Vicodin may be better - but I really don't know - ask the doctor.

Sometimes getting by the nurses to the Onc. is all but impossible. I think Vicodin would have been a better choice. However, it is my understanding they cannot mail or transmit the script because potential for abuse. It is a 2 hr drive to clinic. I just took one Aleve and may just tough it out after that wears off.

I would stay away from any NSAIDS (aspirin, ibuprofen, Aleve (naproxen)) as these can all increase the risk of bleeding. Safer pain meds include Tylenol (acetaminophen), opiates such as hydrocodone, Oxycontin or synthetic opiates such as Tramadol.

That certainly makes a great deal of sense. The Tylenol may help. Problem with opiates is that I have to drive to Cleveland (2hr) to pick up script. I do know they cannot call them in. Maybe overnight mail.
