Well, this chapter begins when i was at the hospital for my pre-prostate surgery physical check. The resident who was doing my checks noticed quickly that my neck / throat are looked suspicious. After some checking, he noted some large nodules on my thyroid. A few days later, i had ultrasounds done and they showed nodules so i was referred to specialist. I decided to hold off any further testing until after prostate surgery.
Next step was FNA biopsies. Left side was benign. Right side was indeterminate. Right side was repeated a few weeks later, again indeterminate so the samples were sent for Afirma testing. That testing shows suspicious and indeterminate. That analysts means about 30-40% chance the nodule is cancerous.
After more doctor and specialist consulting, i have decided to have surgery to remove my thyroid. The risk that the nodule is cancerous is too high and the impacts if it is would be significant.
The right side nodule is about 4 cm, so pretty large. Depending on the outcome of post surgery pathology, there will either be no more treatment, or there will be a round of radio-active iodine to destroy any remaining thyroid tissue. Either way, i will be on thyroid medicine from that point on.
Everything i have read and been told indicates these are somewhat isolated cancer cases, and the prostate cancer did not spread to my thyroid and thyroid cancer did not spread to my prostate. There were no lymph nodes affected with my prostate, i hope that holds true for the thyroid.
Another update when i have a surgery date.
