Dilation of bladder neck contracture

I self-cathed for 30 days with a Speedicath 16fr and never had the redness or flank pain you are describing. I'd be surprised if it's the coating because I think it's just saline solution in the package. I'm sure there are other manufacturers that make a 14fr that isn't prepackaged in solution. I have some straight ones that I used with a pack of "surgi-lube". Found them very messy though so I stuck with the Speedicath.

With pain, redness, prior issues I would see the doc if it continues. You would need a script for different caths anyway. They likely have some samples you could try and see if it helps.

Approx. 5 mos. after surgery, my stricture was opened up. Just after it was opened...flank pain began. My uro suggested the pain could be coming from a 1.2 cm non-obstructing stone. (Which he described as being in "attack position"). Lithotripsy was ordered (last summer) The stricture was still open and the stone was removed. This hasn't resolved my flank pain. Au contraire....it's worsened....and spread...since.

There's also a 1.5 cm cyst in that kidney.

fwiw....In trying to track down the cause of this pain, I actually travelled to John's Hopkins. They found a cyst in my pancreas (come back in a year to re-evaluate). They also want the kidney cyst re-evaluated in a year.

JH's believes my pain is muscular-skeletal. What ever it LOL is, it hurts. lol all the way around my both sides now and in my spine. (but it began in my left flank area)

if there's a point to all of this....maybe....it's that....it may not kidney related. That was just the most logical place (for me) to start. This stuff can be difficult to track down. (If ever)

ureters can spasm


10mm equals 1 cm As a patient, I can't imagine what could make a 1mm stone block anything. Normal plumbing from kidney to toilet is bigger than that. Could it be that you're stone is 1 cm? (10 mm)

I was told by those whose business it is to know such things, that a 1 cm (10 mm) stone can cause pain (migrating about) that doesn't sound like it though

I'm wondering if tappin' on 'em could cause them (ureters) to spasm?

I'd go one further (besides admitting I don't know what I'm talking about).....what you're describing....tapping on your kidneys equating to pain....that shouldn't be some sort of medical mystery. People should know what that is....not by reading...but from their experience (doctors' experience(s)) I do know that they tap on kidneys when checking for kidney infections. And...it's supposed to hurt if there's any infection (like....hurt)

Maybe ask the doc about infections? antibiotics ..

I mean I still have a 1mm stone in the kidney.
The stone that blocked the urethra was 5mm ..it caused the blood infection. One month later stone & stent was removed.
Three months later I had acute Pyelonephritis.
Dec last the Uro said I had mild Pyelonephritis ..but the bloods and urine were about normal.
Then the Creatinine jumped from 90 to 132 but then came back to 90, now it is back up to 109 (range 62-106) so it's ok.

he Nephrologist said if there is no blockage then the flank pain is not kidney related and referred me back to the Uro.

I do the kidney tapping sometimes just to check that the pain is coming from the kidneys ...as you know it's hard to tell at times with back pain going on aswell.
I notice the flank pain is worse the day after dilating the stricture.

I know what you mean about some Dr's.
One guy's default diagnosis seems to be ''back pain'' ...I said but it's in my kidneys ..eventually he diagnosed acute pyelonephritis.

Uro wanted to put me on a maintenance antibiotic but I've been infection free for the past three months without it ...I take Alo vera juice ..strangely enough recommended by my Uro.
