Rectum injury during surgery, a blessing in disguise?

Been doing some reading in this forum which I find very informative and to some extent comforting. I am writing now my first post just to keep my mind away from the Foley. I had an open prostate surgery April 5, 2017 which I consider my only viable option for cure.

Background: I am from the Philippines and 62 yo. In 2010, I had a kidney transplant and since then, been taking daily immuno-suppressant drugs to prevent rejection. My 2nd surgery happened in Sept 2016, resection of obstructed small bowel and removal of my right native kidney. Biopsies revealed large B-cell lymphoma and clear cell carcinoma, respectably. My nephrologist plans to change my anti-rejection drugs soon as this may have been causing flare up of cancer cell in my body. My transplanted kidney is on the right side of the pelvic area just above the bladder, hence necessitating open surgery.

I read somewhere that statistically only 1% had injuries of the rectum during surgery due to proximity and adherence of the enlarge prostate. I stayed in the hospital for 5 days and went home with a Foley and a colostomy bag. After 12 days, removal of catheter was done but with difficulties and came out only after the 4th attempt with some anaesthesia. Oh my, really prayed deeply to GOD at that moment. Experienced huge incontinence for the first time which almost kept me awake the whole night. Woke up early morning still with incontinence and while standing a lot of urine is also come out of my butt. I guess it was a blessing in disguise that the anastomosis leak found its way thru the rectum injury otherwise it would have been worst. Urologist reinsert the Foley later in the morning with much pain for another 2 weeks. Hopefully, come Tuesday, cath will come out easily this time So that I can move on to the next episode (management of incontinence) and have some freedom.

Biopsy: Prostate Gland Adenomacarcinoma, Gleason score 8 (4+4), involving the left midgland and base (20% of the entire gland)
