Any specific PC concerns/questions to raise during colonoscopy?

Hi all,

My husband is having his first ever colonoscopy next week. Should we ask any special PC-related questions? Will the doc perform a DRE?

Also does anyone know how long it usually takes to get results back?

You should mention the RT so they can check for any radiation related issues. That's the PC related issue with a colonoscopy. Of course, they'll need to know all the meds he's on. DRE is not part of a colonoscopy procedure.

The results are normally give on the spot, unless they biopsy something. Then you have to wait a week or two.

My oncologist urologist and radiation oncologist both mentioned to inform the GI doctor that you had radiation treatment and not take any biopsy tissue from the area near the prostate due to possible healing issues unless it is necessary.

Hmmm. Can you tell me if "not taking any biopsy tissue from area near prostate" would mean not removing any polyps in that area as well? I hear that removing polyps during the procedure is pretty common.

That means polyps. Your GI doctor will know what not to do and what RT damage to look for.

I have some radiation proctitis that was confirmed during my post RT colonoscopy.

At the time I had mine done I did not have cancer. I do not remember a DRE being done and got my results in about 2 weeks. I think the worse for the whole exam is the preparation the days before. I am in Canada but I doubt the prep is a whole lot different. Overall it went really well.

You do not want to do anything to tissue that has been radiated in the colon or anus. The area will not heal and cause major problems.
I told my doc not to touch any of these areas without my expressed permission. If an area is a concern then have the doctor discuss it with you after the procedure, and before he does anything. Removing polyps high in the colon isn't a problem, only the area that was subject to radiation is the issue.

I've had colonoscopies before being diagnosed with PCa . If they find polyps they remove them and tell you what they found pretty quickly. After SRT I had bleeding so I had a colonoscopy to determine the source. The doc knew I had RT and acted accordingly. He found damage from radiation which I ended up having treated with radio frequency ablation.
No problems.
