Hello all. Im a bit nervous and afraid. 2 months ago my doctor noticed my creatinine was elevated at 1.26 She then sent me for a kidney ultrasound. The ultrasound showed clear, and kidney were functioning. Yet, urine still had a weird smell. She said it must be my prostate. She prescribed Bactrim for 2 weeks. This seem to help a lot, but about 2 weeks later, symptoms started to return. I had a another CMP panel done a few days ago, and it showed creatinine up to 1.5 now.

I dont understand, and really dont want my kidneys to fail. I have no high blood pressure or sugar. Can prostate cause a problem with the kidneys? I cant get in for another week. She told me that the ultrasound showed 2 normal kidneys and its gotta be my prostate. Ive been reading online and most enlarged prostate treatments are at least a month, some 2 months. I was antibiotics for 2 weeks. Was it to short a time? Can prostate enlargement have a impact on kidney function?

@healthy choice.....I haven't a clue. What I do know is that I after I had my prostatectomy, my left kidney has been achy. Blood work has been back and forth.....(I see that as usual, my experience through most of my life)....

before my operation, I was treated for prostate infection for years. never did a thing. I don't believe is as treatable as the doctors might like it to be. I read somewhere that said antibiotics can be difficult to get into the gland. It doesn't like accepting them for one reason or another.

I think my flank pain...after ruling everything else out...is from a large cyst.

In medicine I guess anything is possible. but if you've been going to the bathroom good end not retentive...I've just never heard of kidney failure being due to BPH. But...then again...whadda I know.

Healthy, do you have BPH/enlarged prostate? If so, it is possible that is obstructing kidney function and elevating creatinine levels. Also, do you take probiotics or use Motrin, Advil or Aleve frequently? Those can affect creatinine levels and kidney function as well...some people are more susceptible than others.

If you suspect any prostate issues, please see a urologist who is equipped to assess those. And, make sure you inform your other doc about your use of those other drugs if applicable or any other supplements you may be taking that may affect your creatinine levels.

I have a buddy that had similar problems. His kidney problems were related to a prostatic obstruction. He underwent a TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) and his kidney functioning returned to normal.

Yeah, I was thinking prostate obstruction, retention issues. It's possible.

Thanks to all those that replied. Actually, I have took probiotics off and on for a few years now. Will not being going back to those. I havent had an prostate exams as of yet, my doctor just assumed it, since the ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder was showing to be functioning normal. Just stressing to see my creatinine go from 1.26 to 1.42 in 2 months. Plus she had me on bactrim for a prostate problem, and I read that alone can raise creatinine levels. On top of it all I am a heavy meat eater, which I plan on cutting down today.

The normal range for creatinine is 0.6 - 1.2. My doctor (PCP) expressed no concern when my test result (1.23) was slightly over. But I would be concerned about the 1.42 test result.

You should get a referral to a good URO and get your prostate checked out.
