No, it doesn't require it. But if you've never had it done before, it seems traumatic. But it just seems that way.

Not really a big deal. Some folks with urine retention issues do it themselves a couple times a day. Several years ago I had one inserted. I was somewhat intimidated, but really should not have been.

I had a blockage after biopsy and had to have one inserted because I could not urinate. I didn't care just wanted relief. I was uncomfortable and because of my blockage a bit painful. Denis

I've had several inserted while wide awake with a bladder so full I looked like I was pregnant during a phase of retention problems due to radiation damage that showed up several years later. I had to have a bladder flush as well.

Lidocaine helps. It isn't pleasant, but a good nurse makes a big difference. Better to have it done where the staff is familiar with urinary tract issues.
