Developed Neutropenia. Is this a result of having Prostate Cancer??

Since being diagnosed with prostate cancer in Dec 2012 my white blood cell count and neutrophil cell count have decreased till this month when they registered below normal levels and I have Neutopenia. Has anyone else experienced this?

I had two separate experiences with Neutropenia during 6 Taxotere treatments. Admitted to local hospital both times and treated with antibiotic and Neulasta. Stayed in hospital (quarantine) until WBC was within acceptable range. This was caused by the chemo destroying all cells.

I understand that radiation and chemo can cause Neutropenia but since I haven’t had either of these treatments I wonder if something else is developing

I certainly would not just let it go by. Putting myself in your shoes, and seeing how low WBC is treated in hospital I would pursue this with a physician. Particularly in the midst of flu season.

Hello!

My experience with neutropenia occurred after my first TAXOTERE chemotherapy infusion ... at that point, it was determined I would need a shot of NEULASTA after each chemotherapy infusion to boost my immune system levels.

NEULASTA shots were helpful to me, in my particular case ... and helped carry me through my series of chemotherapy treatments.

Be sure to consult with your doctor and see what can be done, to address your particular case of neutropenia. With the winter season here, you want to be as healthy as you can during "flu and fever" season!

Thanks for the replies. I am going to see my doctor in mid January and hopefully will be referred to a Hematologist.
