“Happy New Year!” a bit late, but, as I rarely come to HW these days, I will still say it.
I wanted to mention a diet, but not in the context of any kind of magic food that can help prevent or cure PCa, so it may seem a little off topic. However, the diet I’ve been following for nearly a year has resulted in a tiny improvement in my side effects from surgery and SRT, namely the slight incontinence and the frequent BMs. The reduction in the size of my belly has clearly meant that there is less weight pressing on my bladder and the extra fibre has shall we say smoothed the progress of solid matter through me.
There was a good reason for me to go on a diet. When I had my PSA blood test back in March 2017 my GP also did some routine bloods which showed that I had very high Cholesterol and blood sugar. The sugar was at 5.9 when 6.1 would have seen me classified as a diabetic. She also said that my BodyMassIndex was too high: 89Kg(196lbs) and 176cm(5ft9in). My maximum weight just after Christmas last year had nudged the scales at 91Kg(200lbs). (I weighed a steady 83Kg at the time of diagnosis, surgery and SRT.)
I thus drastically reduced the amount of sugar(s) and carbohydrate in my diet and increased the amount of fruit veg and fibre, but I did not cut down on the volume of food I was consuming, if anything it has increased. I have also made sure all my food has really good flavours. Thus lots of fresh raspberries, blueberries, pineapple, mango, bananas, grapes, apples pears, mandarins etc instead of chocolate, cookies/biscuits and cakes. (I’ll also snack of prunes, dried apricots and unsalted nuts.)
I’ve cut down on potatoes, replaced white rice with brown pasta with whole meal and less of it and bread now means Allinson (a high-fibre wholemeal bread); I also found some really tasty Swedish cracker bread that was 37%fiber! I’ll also often replace pasta with spiralled courgette (“courgetti”). I still eat meat, but smaller portions and leaner cuts, and cooked much less fat (no butter) but with more herbs.
I still eat lots of cheese, I live in Holland after all! but it’s more likely to be a low-fat goat’s cheese now than a cheddar or mature Gouda! And for yoghurt is now has to be thick Greek or Islandic stuff that is 0% fat, but made even tastier with some of that fresh fruit.
I have also cut out nearly all fruit juice and sweet drinks. I’ll drink fresh coffee black. I never drank much beer, but now I drink even less, however, I’m still drinking wine, just smaller glasses.
I’m also still okay about going out to restaurants or enjoy food when on holiday, and ate nearly all the normal delights at Christmas.
My GP ordered another set of bloods for six months on and they were much better and after six months I’d also lost 10Kg (22lbs), my current weight seems to be stabilising at around 76Kg (167lbs)
It works for me, but, as ever at HW, if you feel like you might want to lose weight check with your doc and/or uro!
All the best
