There is a background word checker that matches on patterns as well as complete words. If a word or abbreviation from a dictionary that checker uses appears within a word, it is masked out. All of that management is at the site software level, and out of the hands of the Moderators.

Also, I've noticed that a number of things are "on the list" that don't apparently make sense to the PCa crowd, but remember that the site is intended to be family-friendly.

When a poster tries to avoid the filter with spelling tricks, then the Mods have to step in on occasion.

Come on guys, colorful and harmless are in the eyes of the beholder. HW works with men, women, and kids (hopefully at least 13). You would be surprised, I think, of the complaints the Mods have seen over the years about language and context. That is why we have to send a number of more explicit questions to other sites.

I know it seems ridiculous for us grumpy old guys to worry about what a 13 year old kid sees online, but them's the rules at HW.

The "Preview before posting" check box is handy when you notice that the HealingWell Auto-Bowdlerizer has starred out something you wrote, or you worry that it might. (It is not available using the "Quick Reply" window at the bottom of esch thread; you have to click "+ Post Reply" button to bring up the main editor.) You can try different words, making sure to check the Preview button each time before you submit, and keep trying until your preview is free of asterisks. Usually things can be reworded to mean the same thing but without the offending sequence of letters.

One thing I will mention is that the Auto-Bowderlzer is not very smart. We're not a very potty-mouthed group here and most of the things that get starred out are pretty unobjectionable. And when someone does flagrantly cross the lines of good taste they seldom do so violating the naughty-word taboo. So don't feel criticized when the idiot naughty-word detector barks at you. Just reedit your post and reword until your preview is starless. What you were trying to say was probably OK. On the other hand, if you get ornery and foul-mouthed, don't be surprised if a moderator asks you to cut it out, despite your having avoided using the few words that the dimwit system censors.

Here's what I don't get. A word is all over CNN and Fox News. And world leaders use it. But it's censored on HW. 😂.

On a more SOMEWHAT serious note, first of all, 13 year old kids shouldn't be googling prostate cancer and ending up here. Second, it's an Internet forum, I honestly don't think anyone should have the right to complain about language. If they don't like it, they don't have to read it .

Talking about being guests here, I, for one, wish our host would show his face in some threads, and/or submit to an open dialog.

Since I’m the one who started this, let me be the one to end it too, please. I’m extremely grateful to the moderators for the time they put in and the work they do here. Curbing our enthusiasm for certain expressions is the least the rest of us can do to make their lives easier. End of story.
