Howdy All,

I had surgery for PC about (9) nine months ago. Just for the record all testing so far is negative.
I am still having trouble sitting, whether for dinner, while driving or at the movies, about an hour is all I can stand. Has anyone had experience with this and how long it can last? A pillow helps...

Having pain that long after surgery doesn't sound normal. Have you consulted your surgeon?

yes I have spoken with my surgeon, he said it happens in a small number of cases...

That’s such a non-answer. “Sure, in my 5,000+ surgeries I’ve seen patients have psychotic breaks and dance down Main Street in a tutu singing Madame Butterfly. It happens.” Yeah, but if it’s still happening after 9 months, why’s it happening and when’s it gonna stop? I had pain and soreness in the groin and hips 3 months post-RP and was hobbling with a cane. The surgeon’s PA said “it happens,” but he didn’t stop there — ordered imaging to try to determine a cause, found a lymphocele pressing on a nerve, we gave it time to resolve on its own and by 4 months I was fine. If I were you, I’d push for an explanation and a prognosis — does he expect the pain to go away in time or not? How long?

I'm with Saipan I think I would be getting this checked out doesn't sound right. The other thing I would try just from my own experience is to try to do more walking if that's possible, I know it helped me!

For me it took about a year before I could sit on a hard surface and not have the feeling of my insides being pulled out when I stood up. It took about 3 years before I was pain free in that area. Had tests after test all was fine. It took time for me. But check with your Doctor to make sure.

The usual cause of pain, especially positional pain, that persists after abdominal or pelvic surgery has mostly healed is a thing called adhesions. Adhesions are scar tissue that makes tissues stick together that are supposed to be slippery and slide against one another. They often resolve by themselves as the stuck tissues finally pull loose, or things stretch to accommodate the "new normal" -- often but not always. Physical activity helps keep things loose and sliding, and helps stretch things that have stuck together, thus the advice that "walking helps."

The things you can do is to stay active and be patient. While staying active and being patient you should also talk to your surgeon. The doctor may have other advice but don't be surprised if (s)he recommends that you stay active and be patient.

Not to discourage you, but I am 9 1/2 years out of open surgery, and to this day, I can't sit on anything hard, anything like a bicycle seat (including wide seats or split seats). My first year or so after surgery was bad enough to be on prescription pain meds.

Hopefully, in your case, you will see slow and steady improvements, but I understand truly how you feel.
